How do I recognize it?
Anxiety is characterized by chronic and exaggerated worry and tension, even though nothing seems to provoke it. Having anxiety means always anticipating disaster, often worrying excessively about health, money, family or work. Sometimes, though, the source of the worry is hard to pinpoint.
- Chronic worry, trembling
- Insomnia, abdominal upsets, dizziness
- Restlessness or feeling keyed up or on edge
- Being easily fatigued
- Difficulty concentrating or mind going blank
- Muscle tension
- Sleep disturbance (difficulty falling or staying asleep or restless unsatisfying sleep)
- Heart palpitations
What causes it?
Anxiety may develop from a complex set of risk factors, including genetics, brain chemistry, personality, and life events. There are biological and psychological components to every anxiety disorder and, contrary to the popular misconceptions about anxiety disorders today, it is not a purely biochemical or medical disorder.
What can help?
- In general, the more difficulty you are having, the more you may need professional help. Only you can decide how urgent your need is
- Relaxation techniques, healthy eating, exercise and sleeping habits, positive self talk, support system
- Anxiety disorders are highly treatable with psychosocial therapies, medication or both
- Consult your physician to rule out physiological cause
