Butterblock is a small bakery hidden inside an old Heritage building called The Devenish on 17th Avenue in Calgary, Alberta. We create delicious pastries from laminated dough inspired by our travels, our past experiences and sometimes even our followers! What started out as a search for the perfect cookie recipe has developed into the realization of our owner, Karen Kong's, dream.
Graduating from the Baking and Pastry Arts program at SAIT along with her self-determination has led her to working as a Junior Sous Pastry chef and being a part of opening some of Calgary's bakeries including Alforno Bakery and Eight Avenue Trattoria. But her desire for the freedom to create what she wants in her own bakery quickly became an essential part of the network of coffee shops around Calgary.
Pursuing the perfect golden croissant with 81 intricate layers of butter and dough is no easy task. But alas, we have found it. And now, so have you. Whether you would like to have it freshly baked for you or take it home frozen to bake yourself, Butterblock is here to help. Let the rolling begin!

Gerrit Janssen (Culinary Apprenticeship '16), Co-founder and Executive Chef
Two Calgary-based entrepreneurs began Dwarf Stars in 2018. Gerrit Janssen is a red seal chef with over 13 years experience in the culinary industry while Kathryn Kozody has a background in business and marketing.
The first product line looked like little space rocks (now discontinued). In brainstorming astrological terms they found Dwarf Stars. These are stars that don't look exactly like the other stars, or shine as bright, but still in their own right are classified as stars. The really cool thing is that Dwarf Stars can actually be incredibly powerful when pairs of them coalesce (or come together) - they can even create a supernova or large stellar explosion!
This metaphor reached beyond their quirky friendship, beautifully capturing the brand messaging, heart and soul behind the new endeavor. Dwarf Stars is a brand of inclusivity - that no matter what the outside looks like, what truly matters is on the inside.
That's why Dwarf Stars uses wholesome, natural ingredients like organic dry-roasted pumpkin seed butter and handmade chocolate made from ethically sourced cocoa mass and cocoa butter. All of their products are vegan, free from the top 10 food allergens with two sugar-free (keto-friendly) lines. Their better-for-you, award-winning product is also drool-worthy DEE-licious!

Preserving personal histories, one story at a time
Specializing in crafting legacy documents and biographical stories as gifts to future generations. My passion for legacy writing comes from writing family memorials. I wrote my sister's memorial with her prior to her death in 2016, and I wrote my mother's memorial after her sudden death in 2019. Both were fitting tributes, but my sister's memorial was a direct reflection of her, while my mother's memorial was a collection of what others remembered about her.
