Recognition of Prior Learning

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is an assessment service we offer to determine transfer credit based on your previous post-secondary courses or informal, non-formal and experiential learning.

To apply for transfer credit, you must be registered in a full-time or part-time credit program.

The following options are available for course credit:

Transfer credit

After you've been accepted for a SAIT credit program and registered in your courses, you can apply to have your previous post-secondary education assessed. We will determine if you can be granted credit for courses transferable to your SAIT program.

To be considered, the following criteria must be met:

  • Your previous grades must be 65% or better,
  • All relevant courses must have been completed within the past five years,
  • Course curriculum must be an 80% match to the SAIT courses.
  • Detailed learning outcomes from your previous institution,
  • Course credit and class hours must be similar to the SAIT courses,
  • If you're submitting foreign documentation for transfer credit evaluation, include your transcripts and detailed course outlines translated to English by an official translator. A list of official translators can be found through the Association of Translators and Interpreters of Alberta.
  • You can request credit for up to 50% of the courses within any SAIT program. The remaining 50% must be taken at SAIT to qualify for a credential.

Fees

The following non-refundable base fees are charged for each assessment. Additional fees may apply after credit is assessed and further credit is granted.

  • $125 per program assessment of Canadian post-secondary transcripts.
  • $150 per course assessment of post-secondary transcripts from outside of Canada. The maximum fee charged is currently $600.

Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition

If you have current and relevant informal, non-formal or experiential learning, you can apply for a prior learning assessment. To apply, fill out and submit the PLAR application form to our office along with learning portfolios — one for each SAIT course you are seeking credit for — which outline your experience and knowledge.

Portfolios generally include but are not limited to the following:

  • A recent resumé,
  • Detailed job description,
  • Letters from employers/supervisors confirming skill level & ability in regards to the SAIT course in which credit is being sought,
  • Samples/examples/drawings/blue prints etc. of relevant work completed,
  • Proof of non-formal or informal training and education,
  • Any other documentation you feel will help strengthen your request for credit.

Fees

The following non-refundable base fees are charged for each assessment. Additional fees may apply after credit is assessed and further credit is granted.

  •  $150 per course assessment of work experience. The maximum fee charged is currently $600.

Declare your program intent (continuing education students)

If you plan on taking a non-credit program (e.g. Certificate of Achievement) through Continuing Education, you'll need to complete a Program Declaration form before you submit your RPL application package or credit request form.  This will ensure your program is listed on your SAIT student record and notify us of the program you're working toward.

Challenge exams

If you have significant relevant work experience or have taken courses previously and no formal transcripts are available, you may be able to write a challenge exam as proof of your knowledge in the course content. Challenge exams may also be available for courses where experiential, non-formal and informal learning is not an option. A non-refundable fee applies for each challenge exam.

Please contact your Academic Chair or visit us in Office of the Registrar for a list of fees.

General information

  • When course credit is granted, a "CR" will show on your SAIT transcript. The credited course is not calculated in your grade point average (GPA).

  • To receive a tuition refund, transfer credit requests must be completed prior to the course add/drop deadline. You can receive course credit after the add/drop deadline and before the course withdrawal deadline but you will not receive a tuition refund.

  • If you have taken a similar course at SAIT and would like to receive 'SAIT-to-SAIT equivalency', you must work with your Academic Chair to determine if the course is eligible.

  • Not all SAIT courses are eligible for RPL credit. It is the responsibility of the student to verify with Office of the Registrar or the Academic Chair if a particular course is creditable.

  • RPL does not consider high school education for college-level credit.
