Life at SAIT

Kevin joined SAIT in 2007 and teaches in the photojournalism diploma for the School of Business. He has a keen interest in technology, and how it can be leveraged to tell better stories visually. Kevin’s passion for all forms of visual journalism (both long and short form) and how new technologies and approaches have changed contemporary visual storytelling are well admired by his students. While photojournalism is a lifelong pursuit for Kevin, he reminds his students to celebrate the smaller victories in their careers and never stop innovating.

For Kevin, teaching is a long-term investment. What he likes best about his work is watching the career trajectory of SAIT graduates and witnessing their success over time.

Outside work, Kevin enjoys sports and photography, and often the combination of the two. He loves downhill skiing in the winter and kayaking / canoeing in the summers. His other excuses to go outside is his beautiful Standard Poodle, Charlie who enjoys his own walks and hikes.

Education

Kevin completed his Journalism Diploma (Photojournalism Major) from SAIT and has a bachelor’s in political science (specialization in East/Central European Studies) from the University of Calgary. He completed one semester of his bachelor's degree at The University of Economics - Prague, Czech Republic. Kevin is the recipient of several regional and national awards, most notably the Canadian Press Enterprise Picture of the Year in 2001.

Professional Accomplishments

Kevin spent the lion’s share of his career as a newspaper photographer covering a wide range of local, regional and national sports, news, and political events. His first job out of college was in the summer of 1991 with the Department of National Defense Public Affairs Division where he photographed mountain survival training of army cadets in Banff. His last industry role was as a staff photographer with the Calgary Sun. There, Kevin was a pioneer of the news outlet’s digital transformations, requiring adaptation to new technologies and digital tools. As an instructor in the Journalism diploma program, Kevin has used his prior experience with change management to transform the photojournalism curriculum incorporating 21st century relevance and realities.

SAIT is located on the traditional territories of the Niitsitapi (Blackfoot) and the people of Treaty 7 which includes the Siksika, the Piikani, the Kainai, the Tsuut’ina and the Îyârhe Nakoda of Bearspaw, Chiniki and Goodstoney.

We are situated in an area the Blackfoot tribes traditionally called Moh’kinsstis, where the Bow River meets the Elbow River. We now call it the city of Calgary, which is also home to the Métis Nation of Alberta.
