Life at SAIT
Fiaz Merani has been teaching at SAIT for the past 17 years.
The courses he has taught include Introductory and Intermediate Financial Accounting, Information Systems, Accounting for Managers, Personal and Corporate Tax, Accounting Theory, International Business, Strategic Planning and Management, Management Capstone and Directed Field Studies. A new course he is developing, to be taught in Spring 2024, is the International Business Study Tour. It will be a core requirement of the new Graduate Certificate in International Business Management.
Fiaz’s teaching style is varied, with a focus on applied learning. From his extensive industry experience combined with a keen interest in current business news, one can expect recent developments from the world of business to be used interactively in the classroom to reinforce course concepts.
Education
Fiaz is a CPA and CMA and holds an MBA from Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, Scotland.
Professional accomplishments
In 2012, he was invited to travel to Kabul, Afghanistan, to deliver workshops in accounting and finance to middle and senior-level managers of a national telecommunications provider. Over the past few years, he has taken SAIT students on international field trips. The ‘Business Beyond Borders’ initiative that he started has travelled to Belmopan, Belize (2017), Zanzibar, Tanzania (2018) and the Commonwealth of Dominica (2019).
In 2023, Edo Japan Inc., a 170+ restaurant franchise chain, awarded him the Edo Hero Award for his extensive work with two Afghan Refugee families whom he has mentored, coached, and supported in establishing and operating three Edo Japan restaurants in Southern Alberta.

SAIT is located on the traditional territories of the Niitsitapi (Blackfoot) and the people of Treaty 7 which includes the Siksika, the Piikani, the Kainai, the Tsuut’ina and the Îyârhe Nakoda of Bearspaw, Chiniki and Goodstoney.
We are situated in an area the Blackfoot tribes traditionally called Moh’kinsstis, where the Bow River meets the Elbow River. We now call it the city of Calgary, which is also home to the Métis Nation of Alberta.
