Shawna is Anishinaabe from Chippewas of the Thames First Nation and was born and raised in Mohkinstsis, which she proudly calls home.
She is a previous student of SAIT’s Business Administration program, where she majored in Human Resources and Management. Her professional background, together with many years of volunteering with Indigenous programs and youth, has strengthened her passion for supporting and uplifting Indigenous students in both their academic and personal journeys.
During her time as a student at SAIT, Shawna had the privilege of serving on the Saitsa Board of Directors, where she advocated for student voices and contributed to initiatives that enhanced campus life.
As both a SAIT student and a former student leader, Shawna brings a grounded, relatable perspective to student life on campus. She is committed to fostering a supportive, culturally rooted, and wellness-focused environment where Indigenous students feel seen, valued, and empowered to succeed.
Oki, Âba wathtech, Danit'ada, Tawnshi, Hello.
SAIT is located on the traditional territories of the Niitsitapi (Blackfoot) and the people of Treaty 7 which includes the Siksika, the Piikani, the Kainai, the Tsuut’ina and the Îyârhe Nakoda of Bearspaw, Chiniki and Goodstoney.
We are situated in an area the Blackfoot tribes traditionally called Moh’kinsstis, where the Bow River meets the Elbow River. We now call it the city of Calgary, which is also home to the Métis Nation of Alberta.
