Life at SAIT

Rick began teaching at SAIT as a part time instructor for the Legal Assistant program in 2005. He has taught a variety of courses, including Litigation 1 & 2, Family Law, Corporate Law and Employment Law.

Education

Rick has an LLB from the University of Victoria and a bachelor's in history from the University of Calgary.

Professional Accomplishments

Rick was called to the bar in Alberta July of 1985 and remains a registered Barrister and Solicitor to this day. During his legal career, he has been active both in private practice as partner in a medium size firm and a founding partner of a small "boutique" firm and as an in-house counsel to a government tribunal and a large corporation.

Rick’s practice has been varied but he has been primarily a litigator and has argued before every Court in Alberta as well as the Supreme Court of Canada. During his years of practice, he has been involved in virtually every area of the law but in recent years has focused on Employment, Administrative and Human Rights issues. He serves as a Board Member for the Assessment Review Board.

Ricks original plan was to be a teacher but after a brief detour as a lawyer, he is thrilled to return to education.

SAIT is located on the traditional territories of the Niitsitapi (Blackfoot) and the people of Treaty 7 which includes the Siksika, the Piikani, the Kainai, the Tsuut’ina and the Îyârhe Nakoda of Bearspaw, Chiniki and Goodstoney.

We are situated in an area the Blackfoot tribes traditionally called Moh’kinsstis, where the Bow River meets the Elbow River. We now call it the city of Calgary, which is also home to the Métis Nation of Alberta.
