4 things students need to know about AI at SAIT

Don’t ask ChatGPT how to use artificial intelligence at SAIT — we've got you.
Tools like ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot and Google Gemini are expanding the way we work. AI is an opportunity to try new things and innovate, but — like Spider-Man learned — with great power comes great responsibility.
Here's what you need to know about using AI safely in the classroom:

1. SAIT has a policy governing technology use and an AI procedure all students need to read.
The procedure guides AI usage at SAIT. You don’t have to remember the whole procedure name (AD.2.15.3 Use of Artificial Intelligence Technologies at SAIT), but you do need to know our expectations for students using AI in teaching and learning.

2. Check with your instructor before using AI tools.
Since you’ve read the procedure now, you know each instructor decides how AI tools can be used in graded tests and assignments. If they say yes, and you use AI tools, they need to be attributed.
Using AI incorrectly in an assessment or exam can lead to academic misconduct — if you’re not sure, always ask your instructor.

3. Always protect your data and SAIT’s data.
If your instructor is okay with using AI tools for your course work, use the secure version of Microsoft Copilot Chat — SAIT’s preferred tool for students. But pause before you paste. At SAIT, data is classified as unrestricted, protected, confidential and restricted. Get to know what’s safe to share, what’s not and where.
Quick tip: Never put confidential or restricted data into an AI tool or chatbot.

4. Different programs and courses are going to use AI differently.
Course content for Baking and Pastry Arts and Advanced Care Paramedic programs is very different — they’re going to use AI tools differently too, and that’s true of all programs across SAIT. The use of AI technologies in courses will be aligned to learning outcomes and how industry needs graduates equipped to leverage the technology.
Oki, Âba wathtech, Danit'ada, Tawnshi, Hello.
SAIT is located on the traditional territories of the Niitsitapi (Blackfoot) and the people of Treaty 7 which includes the Siksika, the Piikani, the Kainai, the Tsuut’ina and the Îyârhe Nakoda of Bearspaw, Chiniki and Goodstoney.
We are situated in an area the Blackfoot tribes traditionally called Moh’kinsstis, where the Bow River meets the Elbow River. We now call it the city of Calgary, which is also home to the Métis Nation of Alberta.
