Thermal Systems has a new IDEA

Thermal Systems is a Calgary based building envelope firm that has built a solid reputation of bringing to life some of the most unique and challenging architectural designs.

As one of the primary cladding subcontractors enlisted by PCL Construction, Thermal Systems worked on SAIT’s Trades and Technology Complex. The iconic swooping “wave” of aluminum composite panels on the Aldred Centre represents the company’s ability to take on tough, complex projects. In fact its expert craftsmen installed many of the thousands of aluminum composite panels, standing seam metal roofing and many of the terra cotta tiles throughout the Complex.

Thermal Systems has two distinct areas of specialization—commercial and industrial construction. With close to 30 years of experience, the company delivers on premier solutions in building envelope facades, daylighting and mechanical insulation. It has been involved in developing the construction industry with a leading edge workforce, employing many SAIT graduates. As the company’s CEO, Trevor Kent says, “We recruit Architectural Technologists and other School of Construction graduates and our insulation apprentices attend classes at SAIT.”

Trevor Kent, Thermal Systems CEO. Kent says the shortage of high quality, highly skilled workers in the construction industry is one reason behind his support of SAIT. Another is to help SAIT meet its goal of elevating the image of trades and technology education among young people. Thermal Systems has committed $250,000 to support SAIT’s Bachelor of Science Construction Management program, the I.G. Lewis Student Emergency Fund and to sponsor the School of Construction’s annual Golf Tournament which raises money for student awards.

“It’s important to reward academic achievement for students studying at SAIT and to increase the number of skilled people in the workforce. There is a lot of demand for Thermal System’s services. Sometimes our only limit is having enough skilled people to take on the projects that are available.”

SAIT has named one of our six new cutting-edge IDEA Rooms in honour of the gift from Thermal Systems. Instead of sitting in rows of desks, students gather in groups around tables equipped with computers and large interactive plasma SMART boards. Instructors have a master touch screen for activating room features. IDEA Rooms foster collaborative and team learning.

Kent says it’s an appropriate way to acknowledge Thermal System’s gift because IDEA Rooms reflect the real-life construction industry experience.

“Just the whole concept of having workstations set up with the team around a workstation; that is how the world gets built. You don’t ever sit and do something by yourself. It’s how you interact across the table that provides the benefit.”
