Field school trips

Explore program-specific topics and gain applied, hands-on learning through short duration field school trips. On a field school trip, you will undertake a combination of coursework, assignments, and field studies that will integrate learning with the location.

Architecture Study Tour

Description: Students will get up close and witness San Francisco architecture through various walking and transit tours, as well they will get to experience the vibrant neighbourhoods that San Francisco is known for. This trip offers an affordable and safe way for students to expand upon their curriculum and to see and understand a new and exciting urban environment from a social, cultural, historical, geographical, and architectural perspective. Baking and Pastry Arts Study Tour

Description: The 2019 Study tour for the Baking and Pastry Arts program will be exploring the cuisine, baking and pastry culture of San Francisco and northern California. Highlights of the tour include: tours of historic San Francisco (Golden Gate, Alcatraz, Mission District, China Town); visits to iconic San Francisco bakeries such as Tartine, Craftsman and Wolves, Miette and Ponsford's Place; Sonoma vineyard and winery tour, day trip to Muir Woods and Pacific coast; visit to the Culinary Institute of America at Greystone; trip to Yountville (French Laundry, Bouchon Bakery, Ad Hoc- Thomas Keller Group); two-day hands-on class, San Francisco Baking Institute - sourdough, understanding your leaven; visit to local chocolatiers, hands-on cheese class; Ferry Building Farmer's Market. Hospitality Management Study Tour

Description: Spanish spree: Barcelona-Valencia-Granada-Nerja-Seville-Gibraltar-Madrid. Travel and Tourism Study Tour

Description: Trip highlights include: visit to historical sites/monuments, guided tour of New Delhi visiting the Qutab Minar, visit Amber Fort including an elephant ride/jeep ride, Jaipur half day city tour visiting Hawa Mahal Palace of Winds, safari game drive and viewing Ranthambore National Park, visit to Taj Mahal, visit to Agra Fort, flight to Varanasi then evening drive to the Ghat to see the Aarti ceremony, boat ride on the Mother Ganges River and sightseeing city tour in Varanasi. Medical Radiological Technology
Travelling to: Denmark Travelling in: Winter 2019 Cost: $3,500 Application deadline: Sept. 15, 2018
Eligible programs: Medical Radiologic Technology, Nuclear Medicine Technology, Diagnostic Medical Sonography
Description: The study tour will offer up to 10 SAIT students from the Diagnostic Imaging Portfolio the opportunity to travel to Copenhagen, Denmark for 10 days. Spend time at University College Copenhagen campus, tour various diagnostic imaging facilities and participate in different academic environments. This trip will enrich the sense of international community in the relatively small global community of radiographers. Take part in cultural events, visit Danish historical sites and participate in site seeing activities in Copenhagen. Contact: sidsel.pedersen@sait.ca

GEN Box Hill Institute Project Management Program

Description: Alongside students from around the world, participate in an accredited project management program at the Box Hill Institute in Melbourne, Australia. In your free time, explore Melbourne's world-class dining and art galleries, shop the famous markets and discover local sites like Prince Philip Island and Great Ocean Road — and plan to go to an Australian football or cricket game.
Heavy Timber Study Tour
Travelling to: Denmark Travelling in: Summer 2019 Cost: $4,500 Application deadline: December 2018
Eligible programs: Architectural Technologies
Description: After a three-day visit to Copenhagen, Denmark, this study tour will be conducted in Aarhus, on the VIA University College campus. Participants will be introduced to multi-storey heavy or mass timber design and construction technology. Working in small teams, the use of CLT (cross laminated timber) will be explored by the design of a multi-storey residential building, while considering sustainability, regulatory, economy and ease of construction topics. This is a non-credit study tour. However, students wishing to continue their education at VIA will receive a course credit. Contact: janos.dvorzsak@sait.ca
North Sea Energy Field School
Travelling to: UK and Norway Travelling in Spring 2019 Cost: $4,000 Application deadline: Oct. 15, 2018
Eligible programs: Energy Asset Management (EAM), MSE; Petroleum Technology (PT), MSE; Bachelor of Applied Petroleum Technology (BAPT), MSE; BBA, Energy Minor (BBAG), School of Business; Journalism
Description: Learn about the offshore oil and gas industry of the North Sea from two different perspectives: Aberdeen, Scotland and Stavanger, Norway. Offshore drilling is the vast majority of all current exploratory drilling globally. Assess drilling practices and challenges as well as future potential technologies associated with offshore drilling. Norway's electrical grid is 97% renewably generated, 70% from hydropower. See working renewable energy facilities in both Norway and Scotland, participate in discussions around greening of grids and experience a different cultural perspective to renewable energy. Learn about partner organization, the Robert Gordon University, which offers transfer credits for SAIT students wishing to continue their education.

World Conference of the International Federation of Biomedical Laboratory Science
Travelling to: Florence, Italy Travelling in: September 19 - 29, 2018 Cost: $4,250 Application deadline: Closed
Eligible programs: Medical Laboratory Technology
Description: Students will have an opportunity to attend an international congress related to their profession. Participants will have the opportunity to learn about new technologies and the role of biomedical laboratory science in the delivery of ‘patient-centered’ healthcare, ‘personalized medicine’, ‘gender-medicine’ and its impact on Biomedical Laboratory Science. Students are invited to participate in the Congress through activities and sessions provided by the Student Forum.

Service learning programs

Give back through serving local communities across the globe while gaining invaluable experience. Service learning programs can be more physically demanding than other programs, but they can also be more rewarding. Combining education with community service, you'll volunteer or work on a civic engagement project and then reflect on your experience in the classroom. 

GEN Service Learning Program

Description: Travel to Cambodia to work on a community-focused project while you make lifelong connections from around the globe. Discover the sights of the capital city of Phnom Penh, travel to Siem Reap to cruise the largest lake in the region, Tonle Sap, and see floating villages, and explore the vast complex of the temples of Angkor, where you can marvel at the iconic Angkor Wat.
PANA Service Learning
Travelling to: Guatemala Travelling in: Winter 2019 Cost: $2,500 Application deadline: November 2018
Eligible programs: Architectural Technologies, Engineering Design and Drafting Technologies, Journalism  
Description: SAIT students and instructors join together to combine program learning activities with a significant philanthropic endeavour. Grown from the Architectural Technologies Program in the SAIT School of Construction, this Study Abroad opportunity has expanded to include students from other schools and programs in SAIT, including the Engineering Design and Drafting Technologies and Journalism programs. Each year, a selection of applicants pair up with a Guatemalan NGO, Mayan Families, to raise funds for, and participate in the construction of, a home for an impoverished family. In the past, students have also experienced other branches of Mayan Families such as their trade school, health services, and education services, all contributing to improving the lives of the local indigenous communities.

Semester exchanges

Want to travel for a while longer? Choose to take pre-determined courses through one of our partner institutions over a full-semester term. Courses align with your SAIT program and, upon successful completion, you’ll gain academic credit towards your program.

GEN Semester Exchange to the Box Hill Institute
Travelling to: Australia Travelling in: July 2019 Cost: $11,000 Application deadline: April 1, 2019
Eligible programs: Architectural Technologies
Description: Spend a full semester at the Box Hill Institute in Melbourne, Australia participating in classes related to your current SAIT program. Complete part of your SAIT program internationally — you won't need to retake any classes upon your return. You will live and study alongside other Box Hill students giving you the opportunity to experience your curriculum from a new perspective, to meet new people and experience the true Aussie culture. In your free time why not visit local attractions such as Prince Phillip Island and the Great Ocean Road? You can also use this as a platform to discover other cities and regions within Australia. 

International workplace experiential learning

Travel and work outside of Canada on a work placement to complete your SAIT program practicum requirements. You can identify your placement provider or leverage existing SAIT networks identified through your program practicum coordinator.

The Washington Centre

Description: Spend the summer immersed in historic Washington, D.C. participating in an internship relevant to your SAIT program. Discover the capital's rich history through visits to numerous monuments, museums and memorials. During your internship, you'll engage in meaningful coursework and programming, expand your network — you'll leave equipped with the skills and confidence to thrive in your future career. 
The Alberta-Saxony Intercultural Internship Alliance

Description: Travel to vibrant Saxony, Germany for an internship through the Alberta-Saxony Internship Program. Known as the cultural capital of Germany, discover Saxony's world-renowned art scene. During your internship, you'll be involved in research, technology and business practices in a wide variety of areas including, health, energy, environment, education and economic development. You’ll gain essential professional development and life skills, preparing you to succeed in your future career.
