Learn foundational skills and concepts relating to three-dimensional modeling (including isometric and orthographic drawings), computer-aided design and drafting (CADD), and product manufacturing in this high-tech, hands-on program.

In today’s world, with digital disruption, bold entrepreneurship, and shifting social norms and practices, the future or careers in high-tech manufacturing may seem unpredictable. Contemporary workplaces use tools, technologies and automation that were unimaginable in previous generations, and that will become redundant as quickly as they broke new ground. Design software, manufacturing hardware, and how humans interact with both of these, will evolve and change through time, but the fundamental skills of object-conceptualization, digital manipulation and high-tech machining will remain in demand throughout this evolution.

This program covers fundamental skills in 3D modeling, CADD and fabrication, including object conceptualization, 2D drawings, using software to design, draw and manipulate digital objects, and manufacturing processes including 3D printing, CNC machining, and water/laser-cutting.

Your Career

This program is designed to apply to a wide range of professional contexts. Specialists in digital manufacturing may work in a wide variety of industries including aerospace, mining, steelmaking, automotive, food processing, wood and paper products, and consumer goods.


Upon successful completion of the program, students will be eligible to receive a SAIT Certificate of Achievement. Students may also earn work experience and/or CTS credits at the high school level.

Is this the right fit for me?

This program is for students in Grade 10, 11 or 12 who:

  • enjoy working with computers; and
  • are considering a career relating to design, drafting, fabrication and/or manufacturing

Program length

  • Foundations in Digital Manufacturing is offered over the month of July
  • Requires a Monday-Friday commitment - 40hrs/week

How to Apply

Students interested in youth foundations studies should contact their career practitioner, high school counselor or off-campus coordinator.

The selection of high school students for youth foundations programs is determined by each school board. School boards will take into account different criteria, such as attendance, ability to commit to the program, and if the student is on-track to complete any other classes.

School boards will provide prospective high school students with deadlines for program application and registration. Once selected by the school board, students will need to register for the youth foundations program with SAIT.

Students who have successfully been selected to participate in youth foundations studies will receive detailed information about the registration and orientation processes.
