Your first day at SAIT is fast approaching and there’s a lot to be excited about — it’s time to get ready, get set and get involved.
First8 is a series of events during the first eight weeks of the fall semester designed to help you transition smoothly into your life at SAIT. Discover the services available to you and how you can connect with your new SAIT community through seminars, student success and awards labs, SAITSA clubs – to name a few.
Deep breaths, a positive attitude and knowing you’re not alone will help you make the most of your First8.
Week 1: Aug. 28 - 30
There's a lot to do and discover at SAIT. Your first stop is orientation — meet your instructors and classmates and grab a free lunch. Check your schedule for the date/time of your program specific orientation. Orientation is the perfect opportunity to explore campus and get familiar with all that SAIT has to offer. Don’t forget to celebrate Pride Week with SAIT by attending the Calgary Pride Parade on Sunday, Sept. 1.
Week 2: Sept. 3 - 6
Start your week with a pancake breakfast hosted by SAIT’s Alumni Relations. Connect with on-campus services, programs and departments at events and activities throughout the week, including SAITSA Expo. Get involved and enter to win some great giveaways.
Week 3: Sept. 9 - 13
Starting to settle in? Great! Now, let's get moving. Try a free drop-in fitness class — we’ve got everything from Pilates and yoga to Cuban club dance. Plus, more prizes.
Week 4: Sept. 16 - 20
Plan to set yourself up for success by getting to know some of SAIT’s support services — Academic Coaching, Tutoring Services and more — this week. Get helpful advice on money management and, speaking of money, also some help accessing student awards. On Thursday, follow the sound of drums to SAIT’s Powwow.
Faith and culture
Week 5: Sept. 23 - 27
On Tuesday, join staff from Chinook Lodge Resource Centre and learn how to set up a miniature tipi in the Cree and Blackfoot traditions. Also, in recognition of the UN’s International Day of Peace, drop in, connect with SAIT’s diverse community and explore different cultures and perspectives at the Culture Café this week.
Week 6: Sept. 30 - Oct. 4
Find out more about how you can get involved on campus, make lasting connections and gain more experience — don’t forget to check out the Volunteer and Co-Curricular Meet and Greet on Tuesday, Oct. 1.
Week 7: Oct. 7 - 11
Assess the sources of stress in your life and develop a plan to help achieve and maintain balance. Practicing mindfulness can help you increase your calm, boost your focus, reduce stress, and be present in the moment. Learn a wide range of mindfulness skills with help from Student Development and Counselling.
Week 8: Oct. 15 - 18
Connect with Career Advancement Services throughout the week and get ready to get hired. Share your experiences and learn from the wisdom of others at a career readiness meetup and/or tune in for tips on how to advance your career at a drop-in lab. Close out the week by giving your LinkedIn profile a polish with a new pro pic — yep, the LinkedIn photoshoot is back by popular demand.
