Overview

Prepare for the demands of emergency vehicle operation with SAIT’s EMR Driver Training course. Designed for current and aspiring Emergency Medical Responders, this online, self-paced course explores the essential physical, mental, and mechanical aspects of driving large vehicles in both emergency and non-emergency scenarios.

Through engaging theory-based modules, you'll gain a deep understanding of the principles and practices that support safe and effective EMS driving. Whether you're navigating routine patrols or high-pressure emergency runs, this course equips you with the knowledge to drive strategically and confidently.

EMRG 006 - Emergency Response Driver Training is one of four required courses in our Emergency Medical Responder Certificate of Achievement. What you'll learn is an integral part of the entry into practice with the Canadian Organization of Paramedic Regulators (COPR).

This course is ideal if you:

  • are planning on completing the SAIT EMR Certificate of Achievement
  • are a first responder looking to refresh or deepen your knowledge of current Alberta driving regulations.

Upon successful completion of this course, you’ll be able to:

  • understand federal and provincial acts and regulations that pertain to operating an ambulance in Alberta
  • perform a vehicle inspection
  • proactively, offensively and defensively share the road with other drivers
  • demonstrate basic knowledge and understanding of the transportation of dangerous goods
  • operate an ambulance under differing road conditions at differing times of day and times of year
  • perform ambulance-specific driving techniques and maneuvers
  • actively avoid collisions.

You must complete the registration application process, including examination, within one year of having completed the EMR Certificate of Achievement program.

This course is a mandatory requirement from the ACoP to obtain your EMR certification and enables you to take your COPR exam.
