Proud father graduates alongside his daughter
“This is the proudest day of my life,” says Scott Walter PCK’15. His daughter Tierra smiles and nods in agreement; a tear falls down her cheek. Tierra Walter PCK’15 and her father Scott graduated together after completing the Professional Cooking program in SAIT’s School of Hospitality and Tourism.
Scott, 55, retired after working for 31 years for Telus as an electrician. He says he was always interested in cooking. He had the idea to go to SAIT when Tierra, 19, applied to the program when she finished high school.
“I pretty well asked her if it was okay if I came along,” says Scott.
“We applied together,” adds Tierra. “It was great. We weren’t in the same classes at the same time but we talked about what we were studying and we cooked together at home. My dad and I prepared some pretty great lamb dishes together.”
As a retiree, Scott highly recommends going to SAIT to study something new.
“Anybody who has the chance to do it should spend some time working on themselves. It’s a big opportunity and I enjoyed my two years at SAIT.”
Scott plans to take the rest of the year off. He says he’s not sure if he’s going to look for paid work as a chef.
Tierra is currently working for SAIT at the Culinary Campus and as an instructor, teaching some Continuing Education classes.
