English Proficiency

At SAIT, English Language Arts admission requirements for the programs you apply to must demonstrate English language proficiency. English is the language of instruction for all programs at SAIT and is the most common language used in business in Alberta.  

You must demonstrate English language proficiency in one of the following ways:

1. Complete three years of full-time instruction in the English language, with a minimum of 12-hours per week.

  • You must provide high school or post-secondary transcripts to demonstrate this requirement.
  • If you were educated outside of Canada, you will require an international document assessment.

SAIT reserves the right to use discretion in determining adequate levels of English Language proficiency in order to ensure an applicant's success in the program.

2. Achieve the applicable score on an English assessment test.

3. Successfully complete the English Language Foundations (ELF) program

  • COMN 155 and SPCH 155 meet proficiency for programs requiring English Language Arts 30-1 or 30-2
  • COMN 154 and SPCH 154 meet proficiency for programs requiring English Language Arts 20-1 or 20-2

4. Successfully complete one of the recognized alternatives to our English Language Foundations program:

  • Academic Pathway Program — must achieve an exit test score between 60% and 73% on the exit test score to be granted 70% in English Language Arts 20-1.
  • Academic Pathway Program — must achieve exit test score of at least 74% to be granted 70% in English Lanugage Arts 30-1.
Bow Valley College
  • English for Academic Purposes — must achieve a B or 73% to be granted 75% in English 30-1
Chinook College
  • Accelerated Academic Preparation 2 — must achieve 75% to be granted 65% in English Language Arts 30-1
GEOS Language Plus
  • Level 5 — must achieve 80% to be granted 70% in English Language Arts 20-1
  • Level 6 — must achieve 80% to be granted *70% in English Language Arts 30-1
  • English for Academic Purposes 2 — must achieve 80% to be granted *70% in English Language Arts 30-1

*Applicants to our bachelor programs must successfully complete English for Academic Purposes 2.

Global Village English Centres (Canadian offices only)
  • GV6 level A or B — must achieve 73% to be granted 65% in English Language Arts 30-1
  • GV7 level A or B — must achieve 73% to be granted 75% in English Language Arts 30-1
ILSC Education Group
  • Intermediate 4 — must achieve 70% to be granted 70% in English Language Arts 20-1
  • Advanced 1 — must achieve 70% to be granted *65% in English Language Arts 30-1
  • Advanced 2 — must achieve 70% to be granted *75% in English Language Arts 30-1

*Applicants to our bachelor programs must successfully complete the Advanced 2 pathway.

Inlingua Vancouver (ILV)
  • Level 4A — must achieve 80% to be granted 65% in English Language Arts 20-1
  • Level 4B — must achieve 80% to be granted 65% in English Language Arts 30-1
  • Level 5A — must achieve 70% to be granted *75% in English Language Arts 30-1

*Applicants to our bachelor programs must successfully complete the Level 5A pathway.

International Language Academy of Canada (ILAC)
  • Pathway 3.2 — must achieve 75% to be granted *65% in English Language Arts 30-1
  • Pathway 3.3 — must achieve 75% to be granted *70% in English Language Arts 30-1

*Applicants to our bachelor programs must successfully complete the 3.3 pathway.

St. George International College (SGIC)
  • University/College Preparation Program - must achieve between 65 and 69% to be granted 70% in English Language Arts 20-1.
  • University/College Preparation Program - must achieve at least 70% to be granted 70% in English Language Arts 30-1.

Assessment tests

The tests below are considered valid by SAIT for a one-year period from the date the test was issued.

Michigan English Language Assessment (MELAB) A score of 76 in each section English Language Arts 30-1 or 30-2

Respiratory Therapy program

All applicants who have English as an additional language must achieve level 9 in all categories of the Enhanced Language Training Placement Assessment (ELTPA) to qualify for admission to the Respiratory Therapy program.
