Do you need extra support in your chemical lab? Our Chemical Laboratory Technology students can contribute to your company and labs with a one-year paid practicum after they complete their first year.
All programs are closely supervised by SAIT staff with assistance and input from business and industry to ensure the practicums are mutually beneficial for you and our students.
As part of the program, our Environmental Technology students need to complete a one-week unpaid practicum placement in industry to put their knowledge and skills to work.
Some of our past practicums include research projects, site visits, lab analyses, job shadowing, report writing, field data collection and many others.
Interested in recruiting students to support your enviro tech needs? Here’s what we will need from you:
- Host and supervise one or more students for one week.
- Identify work tasks, jobs, duties or projects, which are typical of the environment industry and ideally benefit you as our industry partner.
- Evaluate student performance at the end of the week.
- Consent to the conditions outlined in SAIT’s general practicum agreement.
Give students a chance to apply their core and technical competencies to real-life situations in a real-world work environment through employment in an oil & gas company or in an oil & gas-related position.
In this degree program, the first practicum requires 400 hours of relevant work experience and requires students to be assessed in a variety of technical, professional and interpersonal functions. The second practicum is a further opportunity for students to apply their technical and core competencies learned in the program through a minimum of 350 hours of work experience in the oil and gas industry.
This second practicum finishes with a technical paper written by the student and is based on the experience and data gathered on the job. The paper is presented to a panel including the academic chair, advisors, instructors, and fellow students for review, comment and final grading.
While we prefer students to obtain paid employment for their practicums, students are permitted to do one of the two practicums as unpaid work. Students can do these practicums back-to-back and will be supported by a faculty member throughout their practicums.
Keep the talent pool flowing. Give our students the opportunity to integrate their theoretical knowledge and hands-on training in real-work, on-site settings related to water treatment, water distribution, wastewater collection and wastewater treatment systems.
Operating-experience hours are a critical component to successfully completing the Water and Wastewater Treatment Operations certificate. When you hire students through a four-month paid work practicum, they’ll apply the skills learned in-class and our labs so you don't have to do the heavy lifting of training.
