The next generation of Trojans
Our favourite warrior gets a fresh look for game day
The familiar sight of a red-plumed helmet is synonymous with one thing at SAIT - Trojans pride. That look is about to change as the logo and brand story get an upgrade, but the heart of the team will stay the same.
"The warrior is key to who we are as Trojans - it's a mentality, a part of us," says Wade Kolmel, Director, Athletics and Recreation. "Warriors put teammates first and team goals above their own. We're re-affirming that state of mind with the progression of our brand story and logo."
The evolution of the Trojans identity is the next step in bringing Athletics and Recreation into SAIT's new century. It also completes the institution's own brand evolution which began with the unveiling of a fresh logo and brand story in April 2016.
"The idea of teamwork is central to who we are as Trojans and it fits perfectly with the interconnectedness of the s-shaped connectors representing people and relationships in SAIT's Catalyst," says Kolmel.
"The star in the middle expressing SAIT's passion for excellence encompasses athletic excellence as well. The Trojans are an integral part of the campus community - our brand is an extension of the institution's."
Aligning with SAIT's brand was a slam dunk with brand-development agency Trajectory in the starting lineup.
"We were lucky enough to begin working with Trajectory soon after they tied up the 2016 brand launch," says Kolmel. "Partnering with the same agency that spearheaded SAIT's re-brand helped keep us on track. We then did a lot of market research to make sure we properly represent the Trojans in the new look."
A rich cross section of students, employees and alumni were consulted during the planning and development phase.
"Experience and expertise guided the development of the updated logo," says Kolmel. "It was a team effort and that's what we're all about."
Throwing it back
The first documented appearance of a SAIT Trojan was in 1962 when the hockey team adopted the name. At that time, the institution's athletic colours were green and gold and there was yet to be a logo, but it wasn't long in coming. By 1964, the first iteration of the warrior head made its debut - just in time for the inaugural Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference.
"Our history runs deep in this province and in our institution," says Holmel. "Our fresh brand identity is a confirmation of what it is to be a warrior ... a teammate. We want that pride to run through campus when you see the new logo - we are all Trojans."
