Taylor Desjardins bites down on his gold medal at the Skills Canada National Competition

Skills competitors add two gold and two silver medals to the mantle

Four SAIT competitors captured medals at the 24th Skills Canada National Competition.

Taylor Desjardins won gold for Cabinetmaking and Brandon Mintz earned top spot for Precision Machining. Team Mechatronics with Laine Van Hardeveld and Alexander Wilkinson took silver while Cassidy Linseth was awarded silver in Refrigeration. The Team Alberta representatives received their medals during the closing ceremony, Wednesday, June 6.

More than 500 high school and post-secondary competitors from across Canada vied for honours in 44 skilled trade and technology categories.

Competing at his second national competition, Desjardins narrowly missed the podium last year after placing fourth. He says he was overcome with excitement when he found out he won.

"I was ecstatic - as soon as I heard my name for gold, I jumped out of my seat and my heart jumped out of my chest," he says.

Also a second time national competitor, Linseth improved on his 2017 National Skills placement - jumping from sixth place to second. Although happy with his silver medal win, he says there is still one more step before he feels fully satisfied.

"To go from sixth place last year to winning silver this year, it's a great feeling," he says. "Next year, I want that gold medal."

All of SAIT's competitors earned their spot on Team Alberta by winning their classes at the Skills Canada Alberta competition, which took place in the days leading to nationals.

"Hats off to all of the competitors and their trainers for their incredible effort and hard work," says Nino Belvedere, SAIT Apprenticeship/Skills Coordinator.
