Student resource centre receives largest-ever individual donation

Thousands of SAIT students will reach their potential as they pursue excellence in applied education, thanks to an unprecedented gift from Trevor and Gail Lamb. The Calgary couple has made a generous gift to SAIT in support of the Learner Success Centre within SAIT’s Centre for Academic Learner Services (CALS).

Now named the Lamb Learner Success Centre in honour of this gift, the facility is a key component of CALS that provides academic support for prospective students, current students and instructors. Its offerings include classes and counselling in learning skills as well as accessibility and testing services for students with a variety of learning challenges.

The Lambs’ gift totals $700,000, including $630,000 for the Lamb Learner Success Centre — the largest individual contribution received by CALS — and $70,000 for the I.G. Lewis Student Emergency Fund, which provides financial assistance for students experiencing a financial crisis that could cause them to drop out.

The Lambs have a strong connection to SAIT. Trevor Lamb graduated in 1997 from the Petroleum Engineering Technology program. He is a professional engineer and founded Three Streams Engineering, a large Calgary-based company that specializes in oil and gas projects.

Trevor says his SAIT education played a big role in his success in the energy industry. “I believe in the practical side of business and I liked the practical aspects of my SAIT education. I attended university and received a degree in mechanical engineering before going to SAIT. Don’t get me wrong; I liked university, but SAIT was better. I had a great experience at SAIT because it gave me hands-on experience.”

Gail Lamb says her family’s decision to support a centre that provides academic assistance services was also inspired by some learning difficulties faced by their two teenaged sons as well as her own experiences as a post-secondary student.

“We found out our two boys have Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD). That affected the way they learn. After we found out, I realized I have ADD too,” says Gail. “I realized that’s what created difficulties for me in school and university. Sometimes I wonder what I could have accomplished if I had received support and counselling from a learner centre like SAIT has.”

When considering how to support SAIT, Gail and Trevor decided the Lamb Learner Success Centre would be perfect because it fits so well with their family. They say they appreciate SAIT’s contribution to their family’s success and that their gift will help students who have learning difficulties reach their full potential.

Trevor and Gail both said, “We are fortunate to be able to give back to the community. We’re proud our family name will be associated with the Lamb Learner Success Centre and we hope it inspires others to give to SAIT.”
