Say ‘I do’ at SAIT

Each year, graduates march their way across the convocation stage, marking a major milestone in their life. SAIT has added another timeless march to the repertoire — the wedding march.

The campus dove head-first into its first official wedding season in spring 2015. With stunning views and venues ranging from historic Collegiate Gothic to contemporary industrial architecture, it's no wonder bookings have already more-than-doubled for 2016.

Livia Kolbe, Manager, Operations for Commercial Services says celebration and community has always been the SAIT way, and with a span of services already in place, weddings are a natural union.

"The actual facility and what we offer is so unique," she says. "That's becoming more and more a demand — people want something that has character and that they can connect with. There are very few spaces in Calgary that have this beautiful history and charm."

Kolbe says SAIT's unique architectural smorgasbord and city scape views are the main attractions for brides and grooms. However, the collection of parking, couple and guest accommodation, catering and a day-of event coordinator allows SAIT to truly offer a tailor-made experience at an affordable rate.

"Couples can do everything on this campus."

A workplace affair

Longtime SAIT employee Kenton Restall says it was a no brainer when he and his wife chose SAIT as their ceremony and reception venue in August 2014.

The mere convenience of working at his wedding venue was what initially attracted Restall to the idea. And although SAIT wasn't seriously in the business of weddings yet, Restall was pleasantly surprised to experience the level of service his colleagues were able to provide.

"We didn't need a wedding planner because we used SAIT as a venue — all the little things were done," Restall explains.

Say ‘cheese'

In addition to saying ‘I do,' couples are also lining up to ‘say cheese.' During peak wedding season, Kolbe says there can be up to 14 couples lining up to capture their day. SAIT couples get first dibs, of course.

Victoria-based wedding photographer Christina Craft, who has both taught photography workshops and has photographed weddings at SAIT, says the campus is definitely a photographer's haven.

"I love your parking garage, which is what you'll find from a lot of photographers," she explains. "There are so many diverse looks on the campus — beautiful trees, the skyline, Macdonald Hall, colourful lighting, walkways. There are so many viewpoints, vantage points and other beautiful photography points without moving far."

Going the extra mile

With a busy season on its way, Kolbe says her team, which includes seasoned wedding planner Jill Glasgow, is excited to continue to grow its newest venture.

"We really care," says Kolbe. "I am happy to say that when we get feedback from wedding couples, it's really positive. You will be able to tell we are really committed and love what we do."

Commercial Services will be hosting a booth at Calgary's annual The Wedding Fair on Jan. 17. Prospecting couples also have the opportunity to experience a taste of the SAIT's wedding packages at its upcoming, complimentary tasting (wine included), on Jan. 26 at 6 pm.
