New Leadership for Applied Research at SAIT
Calgary, AB — SAIT is pleased to announce Dr. John Fallavollita as the new director of Applied Research and Innovation Services (ARIS).
Dr. Fallavollita comes to SAIT with a strong background in starting businesses and helping companies get to market with new projects. He holds a PhD in Chemical Engineering and has been awarded numerous Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) grants and holds six patents.
Fallavollita was selected after a comprehensive search process that saw candidates from around the world vying for the position.
"The selection committee recognized Dr. Fallavollita's unique ability to understand both business and scientific concepts," says Dr. Alex Zahavich, Vice President, Corporate Development and Applied Research. "This combination will allow him to provide guidance to our applied research partners in developing new products and taking them to market."
SAIT is currently ranked as one of the top five research colleges in Canada, with the success of ARIS as a significant contributing factor. In the past four years, ARIS has undertaken more than 200 applied research projects with industry partners and developed more than 280 prototypes. With student involvement a key principle of research at SAIT, close to 700 students were engaged in industry-based applied research projects.
Applied education innovation is one of the key priorities in SAIT's new five-year strategic plan and the post-secondary is focused on growing applied research even more.
"The first step is to engage with larger industry players in select industries in which we have expertise," says Dr. Fallavollita. "In addition, we're focused on enhancing our labs to attract industry clients for longer-term applied research projects with students."
Prior to beginning his role at SAIT, Dr. Fallavollita was an Industry Consultant in the Chemical and Materials Engineering Department at the University of Alberta, where he is still an Adjunct Professor. He has also worked with the Government of British Columbia as a Project Manager in the BC Trade and Investment Office.
Dr. Fallavollita started at ARIS in Oct. 2014.
