Earning high school and SAIT credentials in the same year
Calgary, AB — Just months after receiving their Grade 12 diplomas, several high school graduates are also picking up SAIT credentials this afternoon. They have earned a SAIT Pharmacy Assistant certificate after participating in a dual-credit program.
More than 60 high school students from the Calgary Catholic School District and the Calgary Board of Education have registered in the dual-credit program at SAIT since it officially launched in February 2013, after a successful pilot phase. Twenty students have completed the program to date, including 18-year-old Leah Mann who will cross the stage today.
"I really enjoyed telling people I was going to SAIT while I was in high school," says Mann, who is currently working at a Shoppers Drug Mart as a Pharmacy Assistant while continuing her post-secondary education. "I'm planning on being a doctor so now I already have the foundation of drugs and medicine."
SAIT's School of Health and Public Safety has a 95 per cent employment rate and Pharmacy Assistants are in high demand, making it an excellent fit for a dual-credit program.
"SAIT is taking extra steps and working closely with Calgary school districts to effectively ease the transition from high school to post-secondary," says Greg Michaud, Dean of the Centre for Academic Learner Services. "Not only does this help students determine their career path sooner, but it's very attractive for employers who can hire them with SAIT credentials a lot sooner."
The Pharmacy Assistant offering at SAIT has proven to be so successful it's now the model for other dual-credit programs.
SAIT currently has three additional dual-credit programs in the development stage: Pre-Employment Carpenter, Production Field Operator and Business Entrepreneurship. The goal is to launch one or more of these programs in 2015.
