Brightspace navigated. Instructors met. Homework — already?!

Things are moving fast now that classes have started. Take a few minutes to explore a few of the great opportunities to get involved in student life and some of the student support services that may come in handy while you're studying.

Get a peer mentor

Mentorship matters! Studies show having a mentor improves GPA and increases confidence. It's also a great way to meet new people and get some advice on navigating first-year student life.

The mentorship period for the spring/summer 2020 term begins May 19. Since we're not currently on campus, mentorship will kick off online.

Get what you need from what you read

Reading silently in your heads is one of the most passive techniques you can use for learning. The good news is, there are simple strategies to help you read more actively.

👉 Check out this six-step system — SQ4R — to get vital information out of your textbooks, into your notes and stored in your long-term memory. Then, connect with an academic coach for more.

📚 Did you know? Reading in small chunks of 20 minutes is the best way to absorb information. Plus, taking a break for two or three minutes between chunks allows your brain to process what you just read.

Get involved and connect with community

🎮 Saitsa — your students' association — is taking one of their awesome events online. Check out Trivia Night, At-Home Edition this Thursday, May 14. Before or after trivia, scroll through the student clubs on offer — from anime and gaming to beekeeping and disc golf. Can't find what you're looking for? Start your own.

💬 The Reg Erhardt Library is hosting Conversation Club Online every Thursday at 5 pm. This is a great opportunity for students looking to practice their English language skills.

☕ Tea has an amazing ability to bring people together. Tune in Wednesdays at noon for Virtual Communi-Tea hosted by the Interfaith Centre. Lots of conversation on offer, plus games.

Canada Emergency Student Benefit (CESB)

Check out what funding may be available to you. Post-secondary students eligible for COVID-19 emergency aid can apply for the Canada Emergency Student Benefit (CESB) starting Friday, May 15.

👉 Heads-up: Look for SAIT as the "Southern Alberta Institute of Technology"
