SAIT is one of Canada's top research colleges for 2021, securing a spot in the top 10 for another year.
Re$earch Infosource Inc.’s Top 50 Research Colleges 2021 ranking was released Thursday, Jan. 27 with SAIT taking sixth spot. The ranking is part of the annual Canada's Innovation Leaders (CIL) report recognizing leading research universities, corporations, hospitals and colleges enhancing Canada's global competitiveness in the knowledge economy.
SAIT’s Applied Research and Innovation Services (ARIS) division is industry and community driven, focused on working in collaboration to solve problems and rapidly advance the development of technologies to commercialization. ARIS comprises 50,000 square feet of specialized applied research labs and facilities supporting a variety of industry sectors and organizations to move products and new technologies from early concept to later stage prototype.
“Applied research brings together industry, communities and innovative solution providers to address some of the world’s biggest challenges,” says Mark Butler, Interim Vice President Corporate Development, Applied Research and International. “These partnerships and collaborations are foundational to SAIT — rapidly bringing solutions to market and accelerating economic growth.”
Applied research at SAIT is anchored in the intersection of three priorities: clean energy, the environment and building the sustainable, resilient communities of the future.
Teams of ARIS researchers, students and industry partners work in established and emerging research areas, including green building technologies, unmanned systems, environmental technologies, clean energy solutions, advanced materials and manufacturing, and information technology.
In the last few years, ARIS has worked with 600+ companies to build more than 425 prototypes.
SAIT received $11.7 million dollars in research funding through ARIS in 2021. According to the ranking, SAIT also has the second highest ratio of industry research income to total research income at about 47 per cent.
