Heather Culbert the first SAIT grad to serve as Board Chair

Heather Culbert, a SAIT graduate, Honorary Degree Recipient and Distinguished Alumna will make history as the first graduate to be appointed as Chair of the institution's Board of Governors, as announced by the Government of Alberta on June 14, 2016.

Culbert, who has been a SAIT Board member since September 2014, brings significant industry and community leadership experience and a passion for applied education to her new role. A graduate of SAIT's Computer Technology program, Culbert has more than 25 years of experience in the oil and gas industry in the areas of human resources, management information systems and administration as well as strategic planning and corporate governance.

"I am proud and honoured to serve as the Chair of the Board of Governors as SAIT moves into its second century of helping students and industry achieve success through relevant, innovative applied education and applied research," says Culbert. "I am a passionate advocate for SAIT's students, faculty and employees. I am excited about the opportunity to help shape SAIT's future as a global leader in applied education."

"SAIT is extremely fortunate to have someone with Heather's depth of understanding and commitment to SAIT as our next Chair," says Dr. David Ross, President and CEO of SAIT. "As a graduate, Distinguished Alumna, Honorary Degree Recipient, a Chair of SAIT's Promising Futures CampaignTM and a serving Board member with broad industry experience, Heather brings a unique perspective that will ensure our continued connection to industry."

"Ms. Culbert has shown a tremendous commitment to promoting SAIT over the years and I believe her experience will be a great asset in her new role with the institution," says the Honourable Marlin Schmidt, Minister of Advanced Education. "She is a highly accomplished, talented individual and we look forward to her leadership of the board."

Culbert takes over from Joe Lougheed, who was appointed as Chair in September 2014 after joining the Board in 2008. While Lougheed's term ended in September 2015, the Government of Alberta requested that he continue as Board Chair until a broader search for a new Chair was completed.

"We are grateful for Joe's commitment and leadership through a time of growth and change at SAIT," says Ross. "Joe has been a strong supporter of SAIT and its students and has always been available to engage with students, faculty and government and industry leaders.

"We are also grateful to the Government of Alberta for this appointment which demonstrates continued support of SAIT's mandate and our focus on building strong industry connections to help our students build successful careers, contributing to Alberta's growth and prosperity," says Ross.
