SAIT encourages students to fight the “blues”
Calgary, AB — It's considered to be a "Blue Monday," but SAIT is taking steps to keep students happy today and for the rest of the school year.
Blue Monday is a day determined by a variety of combined factors including: short winter days, arrival of Christmas credit card bills, failing New Year's resolutions and low motivational levels. Post-secondary students have the added pressure of looming mid-terms and, for many, the final semester of projects before graduation and job hunting.
As part of an effort to put a smile on student's faces and lighten the spirit on campus for Blue Monday, SAIT is showing The Happy Movie over lunch — a documentary exploring the idea of a "happiness revolution."
Student Development and Counselling is also encouraging students to sign up for a brand new initiative on campus — The 28 Days of Happiness.
"Starting Feb. 1, students who have signed up will receive an email every day with a positive message or activity they can do to boost their spirits," says Lois Hayward, Manager of Student Development and Counselling at SAIT.
Hayward says there are many things students — and others — can do to manage their mental health and help combat the pressures during this time of year.
"It's about brain health. The things that keep our body and immune system healthy also help our brain. Decent sleep, careful nutrition, exercise and getting outside at noon when the sun is highest can all help."
Counselling has services available to help students who are feeling depressed and going through a difficult time.
Turning Blue Monday into a happy day is just the start of several initiatives planned around campus over the next couple of months during high-stress periods for students.
The SAIT Students' Association will be out in full force on Jan. 19, handing out free beach-themed giveaways. The SAIT Trojans are hosting a "Make Some Noise" weekend for mental health, Jan. 30-Feb.1 at all of their volleyball, basketball, hockey and indoor track events. Athletics and Recreation is holding a 40 Days of Fitness Challenge to help students and staff kick-start their healthy goals and fitness resolutions.
