Expert In: More Show less

A recognized industry leader with more than 20 years of experience in the field of chemical technology and environmental engineering, Dr. Vita Martez brings a wealth of expertise and immense enthusiasm for clean-tech innovation and supporting industry in SAIT’s Applied Research and Innovation Services.

As the NSERC Industrial Research Chair for Colleges in Oil Sands In-Situ Steam Generation and Clean Technologies, Martez works with trades, technologists, scientists, engineers, industry partners, not-for-profit organizations and community leaders to research clean, technology-based energy and environmental solutions, including steam generation using once-through steam generators (OTSGs), water recycling, upcycling carbon and novel ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

A former sessional instructor at SAIT — who also served as a subject matter expert for curriculum development for some of the environmental programs at MacPhail School of Energy — Martez was brought on to start a new Environmental Technologies division within ARIS in 2008. Since then, she and her team have been responsible for millions of dollars in applied research projects, including pioneering bio-diesel production using french fry oil waste from SAIT's culinary program, prototyping novel electrochemical technologies for the treatment of industrial water and saline soil remediation and testing fuel cells and lithium batteries for power storage, to building and testing various packaged treatment trains for industry partners across the transportation, mining and oil and gas sectors.

Martez holds five patents, which have been assigned to industry — voluntary royalties are directed to SAIT to help students and the next generation of learners.
