Explore the emerging technologies of Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality (AR and VR). Designed for students in Grades 7 – 9, this 90-minute workshop will bring awareness to what VR and AR are and how the technology is being used within industry and our own lives. Students will engage in a VR-like experience, through the online browser-based software Xuver, which showcases how extended reality is transforming the architecture and construction industries.
Please Note: Students will be required to have access to a computer to participate in the workshop. Teachers are encouraged to utilize a space with access to a projector, so students are able to follow the workshop while working on their individual devices.
Workshop objectives and outcomes
- Describe the Extended Reality (XR) continuum.
- Identify and classify Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR) and Mixed Reality (MR).
- Describe the concept of Degrees of Freedom (DoF).
- Identify Inside-Out versus Outside-In positional tracking methods.
- Identify examples of existing XR devices.
- Identify examples of XR development tools.
Learning competencies
- I can identify the differences and similarities between Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), and Mixed Reality (MR) technology platforms.
- I can recognize movement constrained to 3 and 6 degrees of freedom (3DoF and 6DoF).
- I can list existing applications for VR, AR, and MR in various industries.
- I can identify tools and workflows that I can use to begin creating XR experiences.
