FAQ

When is the virtual ceremony?

The virtual ceremony will be held on Thursday, June 18. Tune in to the livestream at 12:30 pm when the scrolling of names will begin.

Similar to our in-person daytime ceremonies, the event begins at 1 pm. In case you missed it, the video will live on sait.ca for viewing at your convenience.

Can my family take part in the virtual ceremony?

Yes, your friends and family can stream from anywhere on sait.ca! This is a special time and we want you to celebrate together, even at this time of physical distancing.

See above for more information on technical requirements and how to stream.

Is the virtual ceremony mandatory?

The virtual ceremony is not mandatory, but we hope you’ll join in the celebrations. If you decide not to join and have been approved to graduate, your credential will still be conferred and you will receive it via blockchain around the time of the ceremony.

A printed parchment will also be mailed to eligible graduating students over the summer.

Will you be announcing names for the virtual ceremony?

We will be individually recognizing graduands – but digitally! Graduand names will begin scrolling at 12:30 pm and the list of names will then be printed in the commemorative program mailed with parchments.

Will there be a virtual or printed program?

You can find details on the June 18 program here and SAIT is planning to mail graduates a commemorative printed program when we mail parchments.

Other schools are collecting messages and photos of their graduates, is SAIT doing this for the virtual ceremony?

We can’t wait to celebrate with you and welcome you to the alumni family! But first, let’s take a walk down memory lane. Post photos of your favourite @SAIT memories to Instagram with #SAIT2020 for a chance to win one of two $100 gift cards to Calgary restaurants with a SAIT connection: Charcut and Modern Steak. Make sure you follow @SAITalumni on Instagram to be entered. Each photo memory may also be featured on the @SAIT and @SAITalumni social media channels. Full contest details will be posted to sait.ca prior to June 11 when the contest opens.

I’ve already applied to graduate. If I’m unable to participate in the virtual ceremony, will I still graduate?

Yes, once your grades have been reviewed and approved, you’ll be eligible for graduation. You’ll receive your digital credential via blockchain.

Eligible graduating students will also be mailed a printed parchment this summer.

How will I receive my credential/diploma/parchment?

On Thursday, June 18, a digital credential will be made available to you via blockchain technology.

Instructions on how to access your digital credential will be sent to your email from our partner ODEM. The technology used is secure, free, readily available and immediately shareable. This allows you to have greater control over and access to your records.

Blockchain can be described as a decentralized ledger where data is recorded and reconciled in real time. Each piece of data, in this case the credential, is given a digital fingerprint. Because of that digital fingerprint, it is impossible to corrupt the data — or alter the credential.

Once you access your secure certificate through the blockchain, you retain ownership and can easily forward it to employers or other institutions immediately and without additional fees.

Parchments will be mailed to eligible graduating students this summer.

Can I still purchase SAIT merchandise?

At this time the SAIT Bookstore is not able to fulfill merchandise orders due to COVID-19 closures. With things changing fast, campus updates can be found at sait.ca/covid19.

Does SAIT have class rings for purchase?

Jostens provides services for SAIT graduates online. All inquiries should be directed towards our Jostens graduation ring representative:

Can I participate in a future ceremony?

We are exploring options for this class to gather at a later time. Thank you for your understanding and patience while we work to confirm and communicate details.

Will I be able to get grad photos taken at a later date?

Mountain West Studios is the official photographer for SAIT graduates. They have COVID-19 social distancing and hygiene practices in place at their studio, 201-200 Country Hills Landing NW, and are taking bookings from June 8 to 30, weekdays only. However, the choice to go to a photography studio for grad photos lies with the graduating students and their comfort level amid this pandemic. Please follow the Province of Alberta’s Health Services guidelines.

Mountain West Studios will have SAIT gowns/regalia on hand.

Will you be sending out a grad hat and gown? Some schools are giving grad boxes. Is SAIT going to do the same?

Yes! We are excited to be sending you a cap and tassel before the June 18 online ceremony. We would love for you to send us photos when you receive your grad box and be sure to wear your cap and tassel for the ceremony.

Will we be able to borrow grad gowns when social distancing restrictions are loosened so we can take photos with our classmates and friends?

Unfortunately, we do not keep graduation gowns on campus — traditionally, we rent gowns for each convocation ceremony from a supplier. While we won’t be able to provide you with a gown for photos, you can buy individual graduation gowns from the following:

Can I come to campus to take photos?

We know one of the special moments for grads is taking the iconic photo of Heritage Hall and showing off that beautiful downtown view — and you still can! Grads are welcome to come to campus this June for photos in front of Heritage Hall.

To protect yourself and others from the spread of COVID-19 you must:

  • be respectful of fellow grads
  • observe on-campus signage
  • adhere to Alberta Health Services requirement to maintain physical distancing of two metres
  • be aware that no more than 50 people are allowed in one outdoor location as per Alberta Health Services' public health orders

Be advised, buildings remain closed, there is absolutely no access to any buildings on campus. Washroom facilities are not available.

Remember to tag your photos with  #SAIT2020 — we want to cheer you on from #hereatSAIT.

How do I watch the ceremony? Do I need any special equipment or applications?

All you need to tune in to the ceremony is a device with sound and internet access! The ceremony will stream on sait.ca.

Fall convocation in October

A fall convocation will be held for all SAIT schools on October 22, 2020* — details to come.

If you expect to complete your program requirements between May 1 and Aug. 31 you’ll need to apply to graduate to be eligible to attend fall convocation.  We will notify students when Apply to Graduate opens.

*Please note dates are subject to change due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
