July August 2021 LibLights: Support for Capstone Research Projects
The Reg Erhardt Library supports the lifelong learning of our academic community by providing a welcoming and inclusive teaching and learning environment through services, spaces, and collections. One of the ways we accomplish this is through our involvement in capstone courses with extensive research requirements.
“It has been very helpful to have library specialists work with technical communication & capstone class groups…I really value the services and support offered by SAIT librarians!” – Recent faculty survey comment.
Several programs require students in the final semester to complete a capstone project where they work in multi-disciplinary teams on real-life and open-ended challenges under the supervision of a faculty member and often in collaboration with industry partners. This academic year, the Library delivered synchronous and asynchronous instruction and embedded course integration which provided additional support for the wide-ranging research requirements of the capstone courses. Library staff also helped students locate primary and secondary information sources and gather the data that they needed to complete their projects.
Students need to demonstrate the necessary knowledge and technical skills combined with professional competencies and development/execution strategies while they work on these projects.
Our capstone research guides were viewed 899 times and we taught 19 classes supporting over 450 students!
