Olayemi Olabiyi

With a background in economics and a keen interest in issues around food insecurity in developing countries, Olayemi Olabiyi brings a wealth of expertise to his work as an instructor at SAIT.

In Nigeria, Olabiyi earned his bachelor of science from the University of Ilorin and his masters, with a focus on economics, at the University of Ibadan. He later moved to Texas where he obtained another masters from the University of North Texas and, in 2010, graduated with the University of Texas in Dallas with a PhD in Public Policy and Political Economy.

After moving to Canada in 2011, Olabiyi joined the University of Calgary as a post-doctoral fellow in the Department of Community Health Sciences before joining SAIT in 2011 as a sessional instructor — and then permanently in 2012 as faculty — in the School of Business.

Olabiyi teaches micro and macroeconomics for the Bachelor of Business Administration program. Along with presenting at numerous conferences and publication in the Journal of Hunger and Environmental Nutrition, Olabiyi is working on additional papers focused on food insecurity and political economy.

Awards and achievements:

• Peer reviewer for Agricultural Economics and Applied Economic Perspective and Policy Journals
• Presented papers on food insecurity and global health at the Canadian Economics Association, Canadian Conference on International Health, the North American Basic Income Guarantee Congress and Missouri Valley Economic Association
• Public speaker for the Canadian Economics Association
