Drone Fair comes to Calgary
Calgary, AB — Unmanned Aerial Vehicles are taking over SAIT on Father's Day, Sunday, June 19, as Drone Fair Calgary flies onto campus.
Drone Fair Calgary - in partnership with SAIT and Candrone - brings together innovators and professional pilots for a one-day exhibition celebrating drone technology. From drone races to conversations with drone experts and vendors, enthusiasts will enjoy extensive access to the technology.
Drone popularity has increased dramatically in the last several years, with 4.3 million consumer drones valued at $1.7 billion sold worldwide in 2015 - by 2024, the drone industry is expected to bring in $11.5 billion.
"We're seeing a huge growth in drone use commercially and recreationally," says Steve Watts, co-founder of Drone Fair. "It's amazing what these machines can do to benefit society, but education is necessary to prevent any accidents."
Watts says federal legislation is being drafted to address drones arrival into national airspace.
The theme of Drone Fair is Know Before You Fly, a message supported by Transport Canada, the Model Aeronautics Association of Canada and Unmanned Systems Canada.
Drones find a home at SAIT
"Drones can be used in a variety of industries, from construction and transportation to safety and video production," says Brad Donaldson, Vice President, Academic at SAIT. "Hosting Drone Fair at SAIT is a great kick-off as we begin the development and future integration of drone courses into several of our schools."
The Drone First Person View (FPV) Race will feature top pilots from the Alberta FPV community, but students will have a chance to try some drone technology. Student teams from several Alberta post-secondary institutions will compete in a challenge for the best problem-solving, design and flight. The winning team will receive a $2,500 scholarship.
Tickets are $15 for students (with valid ID) and $20 for general admission. Tickets can be purchased at dronefair.ca. A limited number of gift packs will be available in honour of Father's Day.
