Take a break at Pet-a-Puppy
By Kajol Bhatia, second-year Journalism student, Student Content Team
Every Wednesday, Saitsa celebrates Wellness Wednesdays, which is an awesome way for students to relax mid-week. Each month, in collaboration with the Pet Access League Society (PALS), Saitsa organizes one Pet-a-Puppy event in the library for Wellness Wednesday.
It's already known that dogs are the best stress busters ever, but do you know why? Petting a dog can actually trigger the release of an important hormone called oxytocin, which helps create bonds amongst humans. Feeling the fur also helps lower heart rate or blood pressure, which to me seems pretty important considering the fact that exams are soon.
I still remember the first Pet-a-Puppy event I attended in my first semester like it was yesterday and it is always wonderful to see the pets that come back every month. Since then, I’ve tried to make a point to visit my “PALS” every time they're on campus, which is so ironic to anybody who knew me growing up because of my major phobia of pets! I never had a pet at home while growing up and then, when I eventually moved to India, it ended up being a turning point in my love story with pets. Because of the huge number of strays in India, I finally conquered my fears. I have become a complete animal person ever since.
Saitsa’s Wellness Wednesdays have a variety of programs designed to prioritize a student’s well-being and give a quick mental break from the stress of school, such as free massages and, sometimes, free meals.
Six quick everyday stress busters:
- Watch a funny video. (But don’t get lost on your news feed!)
- Enjoy a snack. (I mean real food....)
- Listen to music. (Yep.)
- Call a friend. (And stress their life out with the drama in yours?)
- Indulge in a relaxing hobby. (That lasts 10 minutes, not a game you play for hours.)
- PET A PUPPY! (Or you know, visit the nearby dog park!)
