Phi Theta Kappa graduates to greatness

SAIT’s honour society chapter enrolment jumps from 800 to 1,370 members

Amidst a flurry of camera flashes and cheers from the crowd, SAIT graduates will celebrate the start of a new chapter as they cross the stage this June. Some of those grads will don distinguishing golden regalia over their black gowns as members of SAIT’s Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) honour society chapter — an exclusive group growing at an exceptional pace.

SAIT’s commitment to giving students opportunities to acquire tangible, real world skills extends to the PTK honour society through its mission to empower students to grow as scholars and leaders through hands-on community-building experiences.

Between 2010 and 2017, SAIT’s PTK chapter saw an average yearly enrolment of 400 students. In 2017, that number doubled to 800.

This year, it exploded to 1,370.

Gold standard

That surge in membership, along with a highly engaged executive team and the recent introduction of community service programming, means SAIT’s PTK society is now a five-star chapter — the highest rating PTK awards. The accolades represent an incredible opportunity for SAIT students to join an elite group committed to bettering themselves and their community.

Chapter membership is exclusive to SAIT’s greatest academic achievers — only students with a grade point average (GPA) of 3.8 or higher may join. And once inducted, students must maintain their grades to remain a member.

But the payoff is well worth the hard work. PTK members are treated to a host of exclusive opportunities, such as leadership development courses, involvement in community projects and access to scholarships. Should they aspire to join the executive team, students can expect leadership training, travel opportunities and networking on an international level. And then there’s the icing on the cake: PTK members receive official co-curricular credit through SAIT.

Outgoing SAIT chapter President Deanna Balla — who will be graduating next week — knows about the perks firsthand.

“Becoming involved and graduating with Phi Theta Kappa has been the most rewarding post-secondary experience I ever dreamed possible,” says Balla.

“I served on the steering committee to improve peer mentorship on campus, prepared and delivered speeches and presentations, volunteered and made a difference at SAIT and in the community, gleaned knowledge from leadership courses and led an executive team to achieve a worldwide membership enrolment record and a five-star chapter rating. I experienced personal growth and gained a level of confidence that would not have been possible without the opportunities that Phi Theta Kappa presented for me.”

PTK fosters a community which doesn’t end at graduation. Following convocation, Balla will continue her involvement as a member of the chapter’s alumni. Including alumni, SAIT’s chapter currently sits at more than 3,000 members.
