Prime time for SAIT Students

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau talked "clean, green jobs of the future" with SAIT students today as he capped off a series of visits in western Canada with a stop at SAIT.

Students from the Petroleum and Instrumentation Engineering Technology programs gave Trudeau a lesson on control system safety as they led him through labs on campus.

Will Zhuo, Instrumentation Engineering Technology student, demonstrated with a simulator how he's learning to regulate field devices from a central control room.

"I'm glad he asked questions — I think he's interested in what we're learning," said Zhuo. "To have his support and appreciation is important."

More than 20 students were along for the lab tours including Nicole Jean Bonnar, Petroleum Engineering Technology student, who was happy to see the Prime Minister shining a light on Alberta energy.

"At this time the oil industry needs public support — I hope this visit shows his support," said Bonnar, member of SAIT's Student Petroleum Society.

Here's what some of the other students in attendance had to say:

Applauding energy innovation

Trudeau followed his tour with a press conference where questions from the media ranged from topics like carbon taxes to mental health. Amid his responses, Trudeau was complimentary to SAIT and the industry-relevant curriculum that we offer to energy students.

"I know Canadians and I know Albertans and we are much more likely to want to lead the change (towards greener technologies) to be at the forefront of creating solutions for the world, like the kinds of solutions I saw today at SAIT, that is going to make us more competitive and more successful in the global environment," said Trudeau.

This was the second time Trudeau came to SAIT campus — he was here checking out our carpentry labs last March. Here's more from the Dec. 21 press conference:
