Lest we forget to give

SAIT students aim to fill a Boeing 737 with 24,948 kg of non-perishable food food for the Veteran’s Food Bank.

You probably won't see as many people sporting poppies on their lapels this week, but the needs of veterans don't diminish the day after Remembrance Day.

SAIT students in the Aviation Student Alliance know the shelves of the Veteran's Food Bank get a boost around the national memorial day, but they wanted to help keep the momentum going.

"We saw the news stories about the empty shelves at the Veteran's Food Bank and we figured it would be a good thing to support," says Ethan Gourley, President of the Aviation Student Alliance. "Many of our members are either veterans themselves or want to go into the military."

Weighing the benefits

The student group's initiative is a lofty one - they aim to fill a Boeing 737 with non-perishable food. That's about 24,948 kg of food for the Veteran's Food Bank.

"Everyone agreed that doing this by weight would be a good idea because we can keep a running total of the donations but we don't need to keep the food on site," says Gourley. "We can donate the food as we get it."

Support is pouring in for the effort and they are off to a great start in reaching their goal.

"The Rotary Clubs of Calgary gave a very generous cash donation," says Gourley. "It's really taking off, no pun intended."
