New Canadians: discovering post-secondary education
Calgary, AB — Calgary's newest Canadians are at SAIT today, learning the ins and outs of post-secondary education during the third annual Discovery Day.
A similar format to SAIT's popular Open House event, Discovery Day is customized to provide immigrants with information and support as they consider post-secondary education in a new country. Potential students participate in information sessions on English language upgrading, admission requirements, funding options and more.
"Discovery Day creates an accessible, non-intimidating environment for new Canadians exploring their education options," says Pamela Heath, Academic Chair of SAIT's English Language Foundations (ELF) program. "Whether they are looking to continue their education from their home country, or start a fresh career path, SAIT faculty and staff will help them determine the best next steps."
According to the Government of Canada, Calgary welcomed more than 1,100 new Canadians in May 2014. That increasing volume of immigrants in the city has resulted in large numbers at SAIT's Discovery Day — attendance has more than doubled since its pilot year in 2013.
"We know immigrants have unique educational needs, with everything from needing to improve their English to understanding a different culture," says Heath. "It is a priority at SAIT to continue to improve services to ensure these students are well supported as they begin their post-secondary journey in Canada and Discovery Day is the first step."
International representation continues to increase at SAIT, with a 25 per cent jump since 2012/13. In 2013/14, SAIT programs included students from 75 countries with the highest concentration from China (22%), Korea (13%), and India (12%).
SAIT is one of Canada's most exciting destinations for post-secondary education, offering more than 100 career programs and over 1,400 part-time courses (including online and distance) that position people for success in technology, trades and business. A leader in innovation, SAIT also collaborates with industry on applied research and delivers corporate training worldwide. SAIT has been recognized as being one of Alberta's Top Employers, one of the top five research colleges in Canada and the Best Alberta Workplace for Training and Development.
