SAIT welcomes Canada Apprentice Loan
Calgary, AB — SAIT is pleased with the Government of Canada's launch of the new Canada Apprentice Loan program. The initiative officially began accepting applications late last week in an effort to encourage more Canadians to pursue a career in trades.
A leader in applied education and skills training, SAIT offers more than 30 registered trades programs to support industries across Canada fill in-demand positions.
The Canada Apprentice Loan — introduced in the Economic Action Plan 2014 — will help registered apprentices in Red Seal trades with the cost of their training. Apprentices will be able to apply for loans of up to $4,000 per period of technical training which includes the cost of tuition, tools and equipment as well as living expenses.
"SAIT is well-positioned to support those looking for skills training and this funding makes it even easier for more people to choose a career path in trades," says David Roberge, Dean of the School of Manufacturing and Automation. "Labour shortages still exist in many sectors and students need to know they will be in-demand by industry when they graduate — our graduates have a 95 per cent employment rate.
"SAIT applauds the government's commitment to apprentices and skills training."
The Canada Apprentice Loan further supports steps SAIT already takes to ease the process for apprentices and their employers. For example, the Blended Learning program is designed for apprentices to take the theory portion of their education online while they work before coming to SAIT for a condensed, high-intensity practical portion.
