SAIT sports equipment en route to Afghanistan
Calgary, AB — The college experience is more than just classes and study sessions — sports often play a significant role. SAIT is donating sports equipment to its students studying at the Kandahar Institute of Modern Studies (KIMS) in Kandahar, Afghanistan.
SAIT's Athletics and Recreation department has shipped boxes of sporting goods and athletic wear to the Afghanistan students in an effort to bring the Trojans spirit to their educational experience. More than 100 soccer and volleyballs have been sent overseas, along with countless jerseys, shorts, T-shirts, ball pumps and more.
"We were told the students are big into soccer and volleyball, so we wanted to help their sports teams out," says Glenn Shepherd, Director of External Relations at SAIT. "KIMS offers SAIT programming and that makes them SAIT students. And if you're a SAIT student, you're a Trojan."
The idea to spread the Trojans energy across the ocean was embraced whole-heartedly by staff, including Erin Schwab who grew up regularly donating clothes to friends and those in need.
"When I first started playing soccer, I played with a girl who used to get a lot of my hand-me-downs and I saw how much it meant to her," says Schwab. "This is such a special opportunity to send equipment to students in Afghanistan. Soccer is the world's sport so I know the soccer balls will be a huge hit and I can't wait to see pictures."
SAIT has partnered with KIMS since 2007 where students are currently enrolled in SAIT online courses including business communications, human resources management and leadership.
