Following 16 years in the industry, which saw him work for a leading design firm in all facets of architecture technology, from project design and technical resolution to construction site administration, Darren Courtnage joined SAIT as an instructor in 2015.
After graduating from the Saskatchewan Institute of Applied Science and Technology with his Architectural Engineering Technology diploma, Courtnage worked for a number of firms in varying sizes, giving him experience on a variety of projects.
While he had no specific plan to become a teacher, the timing was right when he applied to become a SAIT instructor. Courtnage has spent the last several years preparing the next generation of architectural technologists to join the industry by sharing his expertise and giving them the hands-on skills and knowledge needed to succeed using SAIT’s project-based learning model — one that accurately reflects the process of architecture. For Courtnage, this way of teaching echoes the work he did in the industry as a project manager.
