Mask requirement

To promote a healthy and safe learning, working, and living environment, non-medical face masks must be worn in all public indoor areas, classrooms and labs on SAIT campuses.

Masks are not required to be worn on campus under the following circumstances:

  • When outdoors
  • When actively eating or drinking indoors
  • When working or studying alone indoors and there is a minimum of two metres between people

SAIT does not allow the use of gaiters, bandanas, face shields, snoods or neck warmers as a substitute to a properly fitted face mask.

Putting on your mask:

  • Wash hands with soap and water or use hand sanitizer prior to handling the mask and when taking it off.
  • Ensure the mask fits over the nose and under the chin.
  • Situate the face mask properly with nose wire snug against the nose (where applicable).
  • Tie straps behind the head and neck or loop around the ears.
  • Throughout the process, avoid touching the front of the face mask.

Disposal and care of masks:

  • Disposable masks must be thrown away  in lined garbage receptacles located throughout campus.
  • Store cloth and reusable masks in a sealed bag until they can be washed in hot, soapy water.
  • Wet, torn or dirty masks should be thrown away. Masks should be changed regularly and changed when damp.

Additional information on mask usage is available from the Government of Alberta.

Where are masks required?

Masks must be worn indoors in all buildings on SAIT campuses. This applies to all classrooms and labs, regardless of the numbers of students and instructors present, as well as the library and fitness centre and other common areas. Masks are required to be worn at any indoor gathering, meeting or study/project group activity.

Additional information on mask usage and where to obtain them is available from the Government of Alberta.

What if I can't wear a mask for medical reasons?

Employees should inform their supervisor. Students can apply for accommodation and will be required to show proof of granted accommodation.

Will SAIT provide masks if I don't have one or I/someone forgot or shows up without a mask

You are required to supply and wear your own well-fitted cloth masks. If you've forgotten your mask, please visit Campus Security to receive a complementary mask.

SAIT does not allow the use of gaiters, bandanas, snoods or neck warmers as a substitute to a properly fitted face mask.

What if someone refuses to wear a mask?

Anyone who refuses to wear a mask in the required situations can be asked to leave the space or campus. Campus Security can be called to assist in the situation if needed.

Can I take my mask off when lecturing?

Unless you are lecturing outside, masks are required indoors even when lecturing. If a mask needs to be removed to better understand someone or to be heard, do so quickly and then put your mask back on.

Are masks required if we can keep the proper two metres in social distance?

Masks must be worn indoors in all building on SAIT campuses. This applies to all classrooms and labs regardless of the numbers of students and instructors present. Masks may be removed indoors when working or studying alone in a room. Please keep your mask handy and wear it if anyone else comes into the room.

Mask compliance policies and procedures

Guiding Procedures: AC.3.4.4 Student Non-Academic Conduct and HR.4.10.1 Respectful Workplace and Learning Environment

  1. Face masks are required indoors on all SAIT campuses until further notice.
  2. Following COVID-19 safety protocols on campus is similar to any other SAIT health and safety requirement.
  3. Students unable to wear a mask must register with Accessibility Services by email to accessibility.services@sait.ca. Documentation of a medical or other condition will be required.
  4. Aligned with SAIT’s existing accessibility accommodation process, Accessibility Services will produce an accommodation memo and inform by email, on a student-by-student basis, the following individuals/departments:
    • Instructor(s) for the classes the student is registered
    • Academic Chair of the program
  5. Students will receive a PDF copy of their accommodation memo from Accessibility Services and will be required to keep this memo (print copy preferred) on their person at all times, and produce it if asked by a campus representative. Following a duty of care and for safety reasons, if this memo is not presented, the student will be asked to leave campus and come back when they have their memo.
  6. Students who do not wear a mask and who do not have an accommodation memo will be asked to leave SAIT campus immediately and not return unless wearing a mask as required. This absence from the SAIT campus will be treated as a non-excused absence under procedures 3.8.1 Attendance Requirements and AC.3.8.2 Attendance Requirements – Apprentices, which means students cannot make up any gradeable course assessments they have missed while away from SAIT.
  7. It is every SAIT community member’s responsibility to report and address non-compliance. Students are expected to let their instructor or Academic Chair know when a student in their cohort is not complying with these mask requirements. Employees are expected to address a student’s non-compliance in the same manner as they address any act of non-academic misconduct: through discussion with the student, referral to their manager, referral to SAIT’s Office of Community Conduct, etc.
  8. A student’s repeated breach of these provisions will be considered to be student non-academic misconduct under procedure 3.4.4 Student Non-Academic Conduct. As well, a student’s disruptive or offensive behaviour towards a member of the SAIT community who is carrying out responsibilities under this protocol will be considered to be student non-academic misconduct.
