SAIT Cohos Field gets FIFA-quality update

SAIT Cohos Commons Field has joined a champion’s league — of a sort. In August 2023, our field officially reopened following a full renovation, one that earned it the title of “FIFA Quality.”

It is one of only 23 pitches in Canada that are Ronaldo-ready.

When the previous field reached the end of its life cycle, SAIT’s Athletics and Recreation and Facilities Management departments took the necessary replacement as an opportunity.

“Being right at the heart of campus and with an amazing view of the Calgary skyline, Cohos Commons Field is such a unique structural feature at SAIT,” says Wade Kolmel, Director, Athletics and Recreation. “It’s a space that SAIT and the local community enjoy, so we wanted to find a solution that incorporated the latest advancements in turf technology.”

Getting the ball rolling

SAIT teamed up with FieldTurf to bring the latest and greatest to the pitch.

FieldTurf, a manufacturer and installer of artificial playing surfaces, is no stranger when it comes to making dreams a reality. FieldTurf’s work can be seen in professional stadiums, including BC Place in Vancouver — home to the Vancouver Whitecaps and BC Lions.

FieldTurf was responsible for resurfacing Cohos Common Field by applying the shock pad system to minimize wear on athletes’ bodies and laying the artificial turf. Meanwhile, SAIT took this opportunity to provide some much-needed maintenance to the drainage system, which sits on top of the SAIT Parking Garage. SAIT also reviewed the field’s capacity for temporary structures, like bleachers, to allow fans to cheer on the field whilst still prioritizing safety.

Scoring the ultimate goal

So how did these powerhouses FIFA-fy a field?

The new field was completed on schedule and officially opened on Aug. 8, 2023. FIFA-accredited technicians were called in shortly after to see the completed product.

FIFA certification includes testing everything that can influence sports performance and field functionality.

In a lab, structural materials (such as shock pads and other layers beneath the “grass”) are tested for shock absorption, heat and splash friendliness, and wear and tear. On the field, technicians review the ball’s rebound, roll and rotation on the turf.

If the tests are completed to satisfaction, FIFA awards the field with a certificate showing that it meets “FIFA Quality Programme for Football Turf – FIFA Quality” standard.

On Jan. 1, 2024, SAIT Cohos Common Field proudly received its certificate, which is valid until 2027.

Smells like team spirit

Athletes from a wide range of sports will enjoy the enhanced surface.

“Soccer and rugby players will be the main users,” said Kolmel. “But we will also have ultimate frisbee, walking groups and cricket players enjoying the updated field.”

The benefits of the field are not exclusive to Trojans athletes. Community groups can drop in to use or rent Cohos Commons Field.
