Dr. Carl SmithCarl Smith, Ph.D. is an energy technology executive and scientist with more than 30 years of experience in drilling fluids, oil and gas operations, and applied chemical innovation.

Previously, he founded techSTAR Fluid Systems, developing and commercializing innovative drilling fluid solutions across Western Canada and the United States. Carl has held senior technical and management roles, combining research leadership with field deployment and commercialization. He is the inventor or coinventor on numerous U.S. and Canadian patents related to drilling fluid systems and is a published author in peer reviewed industry forums.

Carl holds a Ph.D. in Polymer Chemistry, a B.Sc. in Chemistry from the University of Calgary, and has served as Technical Chair of the Canadian Association of Drilling Engineers (CADE). inventor on numerous U.S. and Canadian patents related to drilling fluid systems and is a published author in peer reviewed industry forums. SAIT is located on the traditional territories of the Niitsitapi (Blackfoot) and the people of Treaty 7 which includes the Siksika, the Piikani, the Kainai, the Tsuut’ina and the Îyârhe Nakoda of Bearspaw, Chiniki and Goodstoney.

We are situated in an area the Blackfoot tribes traditionally called Moh’kinsstis, where the Bow River meets the Elbow River. We now call it the city of Calgary, which is also home to the Métis Nation of Alberta.
