Overview

Radiographic testing is one of the most powerful non-destructive testing methods used to inspect welds, detect internal defects, and ensure material integrity in industries like manufacturing, construction, and aerospace. If you want to gain hands-on experience and take the first step toward radiographic testing certification, this course is for you.

This course provides a strong foundation in industrial radiography, covering radiation principles, safety procedures, and imaging techniques. You’ll learn how to operate X-ray tubes and gamma exposure devices, compare radiography with other NDT methods, and develop the skills to interpret weld discontinuities accurately. The course also prepares you for Level I certification through Natural Resources Canada (NRCan)—the first step toward becoming a certified radiographic testing technician.

With a focus on traditional film-based radiography and emerging digital techniques, you’ll gain the expertise to work safely, produce high-quality radiographs, and contribute to workplace safety and quality control.

This course is ideal if you:

  • want to start or advance your career in non-destructive testing with a focus on radiography
  • need CGSB Level I certification to meet industry and regulatory standards
  • want hands-on training with X-ray tubes, gamma exposure devices, and digital radiography.

To be eligible to take this course, you must complete CODE 118 – Materials and Processes for NDT

To be successful in this course, we recommend you have:

  • A minimum 50% in Math 10-C course.
    • If students cannot produce credentials to demonstrate math proficiency, you must write the Math 10-C exam at SAIT.
  • Adequate radiation safety knowledge achieved by:
    • completing a radiation safety training course (minimum 8 hours), or
    • passing a CNSC Certified Exposure Device Operator (CEDO) training course.
  • A clear understanding of the training requirements and prerequisites for NDT Certification.

If you have completed the above requirements at a school other than SAIT, email your proof of completion documents to conedadvising@sait.ca at least one week prior to the course start.

Note: Students who are already certified in another non-destructive testing method are exempt from this prerequisite. The minimum age for enrollment is 18 years.

Upon successful completion of this course, you'll be able to:

  • describe radiography as a method of non-destructive testing
  • employ the use of safety equipment and requirements involved in performing industrial radiography
  • describe the industrial radiographic imaging process
  • outline industrial X-ray tube procedures
  • outline the procedures to obtain quality radiographs and required sensitivity
  • interpret relevant film indications caused by discontinuities
  • identify radiographic exposure techniques used for a variety of test articles
  • identify the use of digital radiography and computer radiography in NDT
  • perform practical radiographic procedures that meet specific requirements.
