Overview
Are you considering a career as a certified Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) technician?
Industry demand for NDT technicians certified in various NDT methods including Industrial Radiography Testing (RT), Liquid Penetrant Inspection (PT), Magnetic Particle Inspection (MT) and Ultrasonic Testing (UT) is ongoing and expected to rise as the NDT workforce nears retirement.
Your first step along the NDT training journey is to lock down your understanding of the materials and processes used in all NDT methods. This is foundational knowledge required before you can start training to get certified in any NDT method.
This course will help you meet this goal with the guidance of our qualified NDT instructors. You’ll get an overview of casting, forging and welding processes. You’ll discuss defects at various stages of processing and during service, defect detection, mechanical testing and heat treatments. This course concludes with a final NRCan NDTCB Materials and Processes completion exam which you’ll write in-person under the supervision of a proctor.
- For the classroom-based course, your exam will be paper-based and proctored by your instructor.
- If you're taking the online-format course, you'll be writing the exam online at a testing centre near you. Instructions for booking your exam and proctor will be provided in your Brightspace (D2L) course.
This course is ideal if you:
- want to get certified to work as an NDT technician in sectors such as maintenance, pipelines and refineries, transportation, utilities, construction, steel and other manufacturing
- want to complete your NDT training on a part-time, course-by-course basis to accommodate your busy schedule
- have been working in the field and are required to take this course as a refresher and/or to re-certify for an NDT method.
In Canada, NDT certification is regulated by the Canadian General Standards Board (CGSB) and administered by Resources Canada (NRCan) National Non-Destructive Testing Certification Body (NDTCB). There are three steps required to obtain CGSB NDT Certification: training, work experience and CGSB exams. These steps are required for each level of certification in each method.
SAIT is a Recognized Training Organization (RTO) accepted by the NRCan NDTCB to conduct this course and administer the associated completion exam.
To register for this course you must provide proof that

Upon successful completion of this course, you’ll be able to:
- apply fundamental knowledge of materials to complete inspections using various NDT methods
- identify various types of materials according to their specific groups
- explain the properties of metals in both the liquid and solid state
- identify the processes of making and refining iron and steel
- explain the process of casting and how discontinuities are formed to accurately identify them
- explain the various processes involved in deforming metals in their solid state
- explain the common mechanical tests that can be performed on metals to determine their properties
- outline how heat treating and other processes affect the hardness of alloys
- explain the process of welding and how discontinuities are formed to accurately identify them
- explain the formation of service discontinuities and the mechanisms of service failures to accurately identify them.
Upon successful completion of this non-credit course with a minimum 70% (B minus), you’ll receive a Recognized Training Organization (RTO) Training Certificate Substitution Request Form signed and dated by SAIT, attesting to your successful completion of the course and a copy of your SAIT transcript.
