Overview

Emotional intelligence (EI), or emotional quotient (EQ), is the ability to understand emotions in ourselves and in others and to process emotions effectively in our personal and professional lives.

Emotional intelligence is a set of emotional and social skills that influence the way we perceive and express ourselves, develop and maintain relationships, cope with challenges, and use emotional information to be effective.

With increased emotional intelligence, the emotional part of our brains works together with the rational part of our brain to guide effective thinking and intentional action. In this Emotional Intelligence course, you'll explore the competencies that make up EQ, how they relate to you, and develop goals for your growth in this area.

Upon completion of this course, you'll be able to:

  • define emotional intelligence and how it relates to effectiveness in work and life
  • describe the competencies that make up emotional intelligence and what those mean for you and your development
  • identify the skills, attitudes and practices that build stronger EQ competencies
  • generate a plan for self-development in emotional intelligence.

SAIT is located on the traditional territories of the Niitsitapi (Blackfoot) and the people of Treaty 7 which includes the Siksika, the Piikani, the Kainai, the Tsuut’ina and the Îyârhe Nakoda of Bearspaw, Chiniki and Goodstoney.

We are situated in an area the Blackfoot tribes traditionally called Moh’kinsstis, where the Bow River meets the Elbow River. We now call it the city of Calgary, which is also home to the Métis Nation of Alberta.
