Overview

In industrial automation, a well-designed Human-Machine Interface (HMI) can mean the difference between smooth operations and costly downtime. As industries move toward smarter, more efficient systems, professionals with HMI development expertise are in high demand.

If you’re looking to advance in your current role or complete the PLC – HMI Certificate of Achievement, this course is the next step in your journey. You’ll develop the expertise to design, build, and optimize HMIs using Allen Bradley PanelView Plus and FactoryTalk View Studio, giving you the skills and knowledge to design and implement professional HMI systems that improve efficiency, safety, and user experience.

Through practical applications and real-world exercises, you’ll work with HMI tags, animations, and communication configurations to ensure seamless PLC integration, and you’ll learn to develop intuitive graphical interfaces, configure alarms, and create real-time data displays for precision and safety.

This course is ideal if you:

  • want real-world experience designing, configuring, and implementing industrial HMI applications
  • work in or plan to enter industrial automation industries like manufacturing, process automation, energy, or system integration
  • are seeking practical expertise in graphical user interfaces, alarms, and real-time data visualization for industrial control
  • are responsible for automation systems and want to improve efficiency, control, and user interaction.

To be eligible to take this course, you must complete CMPC 104 - Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) III.

If you have completed this requirement at a school other than SAIT, please email your proof of completion documents to conedadvising@sait.ca at least one week prior to the course start date.

Upon successful completion of this course, you'll be able to:

  • develop a professional HMI and PLC program
  • identify the PanelView Plus features discuss the features of the FactoryTalk View Studio software and create a graphical display application and interface with a PLC controller
  • describe the various features and communication types available in FactoryTalk View Studio
  • create tags using FactoryTalk View Studio software and describe the process required to create a database and associated tags create graphic displays using FactoryTalk View Studio software
  • create and animate displays using FactoryTalk View Studio software
  • explain how Expressions are used in Factory Talk Studio and describe how a derived tag is the result of an expression.
