Through industry-relevant training, you'll gain hands-on experience with Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), Human-Machine Interfaces (HMIs), process control, and industrial networking using Allen-Bradley Studio 5000 and FactoryTalk View Studio software. As you build your expertise, you'll develop essential programming, troubleshooting, and optimization skills, giving you the confidence to work with complex automation systems.

To be successful in this program, we recommend you have:  

  • working knowledge of DC electric circuits 
  • Boolean logic knowledge 
  • familiarity with personal computers.

Upon successful completion of this program, you’ll be able to: 

  • identify Logix and ControlLogix platforms, components, and their functions within industrial automation systems 
  • create and configure projects using Studio 5000 software, including I/O setup and logic routines  
  • modify and enhance Studio 5000 applications by adding logic, descriptors, and comments  
  • demonstrate the use of timers, counters, one-shot instructions, and data movement functions in a Logix 5000 application  
  • compare and apply various Studio 5000 programming languages, mathematical functions, and logical instructions to manipulate data  
  • implement program flow control using conditional and unconditional branches to improve efficiency and organization  
  • construct ladder logic routines using analog input and output signals for process loop control  
  • analyze and configure open and closed loop control systems, including PID controllers for process control applications  
  • develop and manage industrial networks, including DeviceNet, ControlNet, and Ethernet configurations  
  • design professional HMI and PLC programs using FactoryTalk View Studio and PanelView Plus 
  • create graphical display applications and establish communication with PLC controllers using FactoryTalk View Studio  
  • generate and manage HMI tags, databases, and animated graphic displays to enhance operator interaction  
  • explain the role of expressions and derived tags in FactoryTalk View Studio applications  
  • develop control system modules and structured tag databases using industry best practices. 

Program outline

To successfully complete this certificate, you are required to complete five mandatory courses. 

You must complete CMPC 001 first. Review the mandatory prerequisites for the remaining courses.

How to apply for this certificate

Once you have registered for any course offered in this certificate, you will be automatically eligible to complete the certificate. You will have up to three years to complete this program. You may track your progression by signing in to your Continuing Education student account.

Certifications and professional designations

Upon successful completion of all the required courses in this certificate program, you’ll receive an electronically issued SAIT Certificate of Achievement and transcript.

You’ll be able to self-print a proof of completion document from your Continuing Education student account. Please note parchments are not issued for individual courses.

This program consists of five mandatory courses with varying fees. Fees include access to all course-related materials and resources found in Brightspace (D2L).
