Overview

Negotiation Essentials introduces the foundational principles, strategies, and techniques of negotiation across a variety of business and interpersonal contexts. Blending theoretical frameworks with hands-on practice, the course prepares you to navigate complex negotiation scenarios using strategic planning, effective communication, and ethical decision-making. Through role-play, simulations, video analysis, and case studies, you'll gain practical experience and insights into both distributive and integrative negotiation approaches, cross-cultural considerations, and current trends including artificial intelligence (AI) in negotiation.

Upon successful completion of this course, you'll be able to:

  • develop a structured, step-by-step approach to negotiation, grounded in theory and adaptable across a variety of professional and interpersonal contexts
  • demonstrate strategic preparation techniques by conducting research, engaging in rehearsal, and applying systematic review processes to enhance negotiation readiness
  • apply effective opening strategies and exploration techniques, including the use of strategic questioning and active listening, to build rapport and uncover underlying interests
  • utilize advanced bargaining and problem-solving skills to overcome challenges, create mutual value, and apply negotiation tactics with confidence and agility
  • design and finalize clear, comprehensive agreements, and implement strategies to sustain long-term relationships and prevent post-negotiation conflicts
  • recognize and evaluate emerging trends in negotiation, including the use of AI tools to support decision-making, preparation, and analysis.

We are situated in an area the Blackfoot tribes traditionally called Moh’kinsstis, where the Bow River meets the Elbow River. We now call it the city of Calgary, which is also home to the Métis Nation of Alberta.
