Overview

Get ready to work in the rapidly changing and demanding audio production and engineering field.

This lab-based course will equip you with the basic technical and communication skills necessary to become a professional live sound engineer.

You'll develop an excellent working knowledge of live sound by working directly with the equipment and learning signal and system theory fundamentals. Furthermore, you’ll develop and demonstrate these skills through a group assignment threaded throughout the course, providing you with the expertise needed to be part of a technical sound crew and production team.

If you are completing the Digital Audio Certificate of AchievementAUDI 011 Digital Sound is a mandatory prerequisite for this course. 

If you are completing the Event Technician Certificate of AchievementAUDI 017 Introduction to Event Production and Content Creation is a mandatory prerequisite for this course.

Upon successful completion of this course, you’ll be able to:

  • discuss the environment and different roles in the development of a live sound engineer
  • explain how to select the proper microphone for a specific application
  • describe various types of audio filters and equalization
  • demonstrate the operation of a mixing console
  • identify various types of loudspeaker systems typically used in the live event
  • discuss how to properly match amplifiers and loudspeakers
  • assess various types of dynamics and effects of signal processors
  • demonstrate the correct operation of a sound system.

You’ll demonstrate your skills and knowledge through coursework and assessments during class time. You must attend and participate in all classes to be considered job-ready once the course is complete.

Upon successful completion of this non-credit course, you’ll receive an electronic copy of your official transcript. You’ll also be able to self-print a proof of completion document from your Continuing Education student account.

Textbook and reading list

All course materials are included in your tuition fees. 

You may optionally purchase The Sound Reinforcement Handbook (2nd Edition) written for Yamaha by Gary Davis and Ralph Jones (ISBN 0881889008). This is not required for the course.

To be successful in this course, you’ll need:

A functional webcam and microphone are recommended to allow for a more collaborative learning experience.

Additional supplies

The following equipment is required for the first day of this course:

  • one USB stick (minimum 32GB)
  • one pair of closed-back, plug-in headphones (1/8-inch / 3.5mm jack)
